Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen said an opportune bye week has allowed his players to get their legs back as the 22nd-ranked Badgers renew their regional rivalry at Iowa - with the concern being one leg in particular. The week off allowed standout senior linebacker Chris Borland to rest his strained right hamstring, injured two weeks ago in a 56-32 victory over Illinois. Borland is expected to play against Iowa. ''He would not have played last Saturday,'' Andersen said. ''It came at a great time for Chris because I know how much it means to him and how much it means for us to have him on the field. And, for our football team, we took advantage of it, tried to get our legs back underneath us as much as possible.'' Borland, who missed two games last season with the same strained hamstring, said rest is the only cure. ''I'm really not a big percentage guy, either you can go or you can't,'' Borland said. ''Today, I couldn...

Gordon, Borland named award semifinalists

You must be doing something right as a team when you get an offensive and defensive player named semifinalists for postseason awards.  That's exactly what happened on Tuesday as Melvin Gordon was named to the Maxwell Award semifinalist list and Chris Borland was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik award.  Both of those awards happen to be pretty major, with the Maxwell...

Not starting, sixth-year QB Curt Phillips makes best of situation

MADISON, Wis. -- The notebook fills a little more each week, useful tidbits only Curt Phillips understands. He can't know just yet, but it could represent the start of something big for his second football life -- even as his first sputters toward the finish line. No, this is not the season Phillips envisioned for himself when he returned to the University of Wisconsin after...

Wisconsin Football: Comparison to 1999-2000 Rose Bowl winning team

The last time the Wisconsin Badgers were victorious in Pasadena, California was in the 2000 Rose Bowl game. Barry Alvarez was head coach of the Wisconsin football team at the time when the Badgers (9-2, 7-1 Big Ten) prevailed over Stanford (8-3) 17-9. Through the first 7 games of the 1999-2000 Wisconsin football season, the Badgers found themselves (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) with a dominant...

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Linebacker Chris Borland has missed a second day of practice for No. 22 Wisconsin as he recovers from a strained right hamstring. Badgers' Duje Dukan grateful after season lost to mono

MADISON, Wis. -- Maybe it's a stretch to suggest coming down with mononucleosis was the best thing to ever happen to Duje Dukan. When he dropped 16 pounds, missed two weeks of school, saw his throat swell like a grapefruit and couldn't ingest much more than fruit smoothies, it sure didn't feel like some type of blessing. In some respects, however, Dukan is thankful things...

Gard borthers set to face off when Badgers host UW-Platteville

MADISON, Wis. -- Greg Gard carried a clipboard and a red folder labeled "UW-Platteville" under his arm Monday inside the Kohl Center. Gard, Wisconsin's associate head coach, often finds himself in charge of scouting the Badgers' upcoming opponent, so the routine was nothing new. In this instance, however, he probably didn't need the folder. Gard's knowledge...

Wisconsin sets sights on protecting Heartland Trophy

MADISON, Wis. -- As rivalry hardware goes, the Heartland Trophy hardly holds up with the most significant in college football. There is no wartime implication or even a history of its existence before 2004.And during an era in which Wisconsin has won three straight Big Ten championships and appeared in three Rose Bowls, the question is: Does a trophy game against an Iowa team that...
