Red Sox P Daniel Bard, who we all know struggled mightily last season has been sent down to Double-A Portland. Globe: Bard being sent down, which was expected because of his recent struggles, means Clayton Mortensen has made the team as a reliever. Bard appeared in eight games in camp. Over eight innings he allowed six earned runs on nine hits with four walks and two hit batters. Putting 15 batters on base in eight innings was a sign that his control has not returned. Bard did strike out 10, however. That is a sign that he can be salvaged. Was this a surprise to anyone? When you sky-rocket from a 3.33 ERA to a 6.22 ERA in one year, obviously something ain't right. He improved slightly this Spring Training by striking out 10 in eight innings of work, but the control clearly has not returned to the 27-year-old's dominate set-up years. This recovery project wasn't going to happen in one Spring Training. The key for Farrell was to get Bard on a different program to re-develop into the feared bullpen arm he once was. Expect Bard back in mid-to-late May.
