Last Friday, Bellator was set to crown a featherweight tournament winner. However, Shahbulat Shamhalaev was forced to withdraw from the finals against Rad Martinez (Pictured) at the 11th hour with a bad bout of food poisoning. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney initially said they would push the scrap back to “Bellator 84” this Friday in Indiana. However, this time it is Martinez’s turn to cause a rescheduling. It has been well publicized that Martinez has dedication most of his life to care for his father, who was involved in a horrific car accident that nearly cost him his life. Although Richard Martinez was able to survive the incident, he suffered severe brain damage and was no longer able to function on his own. Rad has been personally spearheading his father’s care since the age of 11. (If you don’t know Rad’s selfless story of sacrifice, do yourself a favor and click HERE) “I spoke too soon at the show last Friday,” Rebney admitted during Tuesday’s conference call. “Rad is saddled with responsibilities that are admirable. None of us can probably understand the depth and the level of what he’s got to deal with. Post-fight, I talked to Rad and got he and his brother on the phone. We just sat down and talked for a while. “Literally, Rad is not in a position to be able to fight – not because he’s not ready, not because he’s not in incredible shape, not because he didn’t prepare but simply because he’s got to take care of his dad.” Rebney didn’t disclose when in 2013 the 145-pound finale would go down. The victor scores a $100,000 paycheck and next dibs at the featherweight throne.
