SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The 11th-ranked Arizona State baseball team jumped out to a six-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, routing Winthrop 17-2 in the teams third game at the Coca-Cola Classic. Third baseman Michael Benjamin finished with a career-best five hits and second baseman Joey DeMichele led the team with five RBIs.
For ASU (8-1), right-hander Trevor Williams (3-0) earned his third win of the season, giving up no earned runs on four hits with a trio of strikeouts in six innings.
ASU sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the opening frame. Five Sun Devils collected at least one RBI, with the inning highlighted by a two-run single by outfielder Trever Allen and back-to-back RBI hits by Benjamin and outfielder Andrew Aplin.
The Devils scored six runs again in the bottom of the fifth inning, getting a two-run single from DeMichele and a two-run double from first baseman Abe Ruiz.
