Blake Griffin made some ears perk up this week when he insisted the Clippers should not hang a division championship banner in the Staples Center. While teammate Caron Butler might have disagreed with him, they both expect bigger things than a division title. But as far as Griffin's comments are concerned, he is very correct. In the NBA, the Lakers and Celtics hang banners for NBA titles, not division or conference titles. Griffin understands this, especially since the Clippers share the same home court as the Lakers. While this might be the best season ever for the Clippers, and should receive some recognition, a banner could possibly be hung in the Clippers practice facility, which Griffin even suggested. When something like this comes about, recognizing team achievements other than the sports championship title, I always refer to Lord Stanley's Cup for guidance. When a NHL team wins the conferences trophy before the Stanley Cup round, they skate out to the presentation. Here's a good explanation of hockey's trophy rules when it comes to the conference trophies versus the Cup. And here as well.I don't follow the NHL until the playoffs. It's not that I don't enjoy it, I just have never gotten into it. But I totally love the way they treat the conference trophy. When you get to the playoffs, if you don't win the title, you didn't win anything. And that's how it should be treated. Kudos to Blake Griffin for understanding that. Now go make more Kia commercials!
