Once owners of the best record in the majors, the slumping Boston Red Sox now find themselves out of the top spot in the AL East for the first time this season.
The Red Sox hope to get back on track and avoid their seventh loss in eight games Friday night when they open a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
Boston (21-14) has one win since a major league-best 20-8 start, falling percentage points behind the New York Yankees in the division and into a tie with Baltimore for second.
The Red Sox made a pair of errors and allowed four unearned runs in a 5-3 loss Thursday as they dropped the last three of a four-game series to Minnesota. They've committed 11 errors over the last seven games after having that many in their first 28 contests.
"I don't think anybody is worried about the last seven games,'' said Dustin Pedroia, who is batting .472 over his last nine home games. "It is the big leagues and everybody is good.''

It’s been a little over a calendar year since the Red Sox called up Will Middlebrooks to the majors. Kevin Youkilis went on the DL, and Middlebrooks took over and won the hearts of Boston fans, even in the midst of a miserable season for the Sox. In his first 41 games, he hit .326/.365/.583. It was a fantastic line, especially for a rookie. His performance, coupled with injuries...

With news coming down on Saturday morning that Joel Hanrahan will need season-ending surgery, the Red Sox’ biggest need has finally emerged. Boston needs to bolster its bullpen.
How the team chooses to do so remains to be seen. They could either try to pull someone up from the minors like Rubby De La Rosa, or address the need via trade.
To hear how WEEI’s Rob Bradford and Mike...

Heading into Friday night, the Red Sox, Orioles and Yankees sat tied for first place in the American League East — though New York technically held an edge by percentage point. Boston’s recent struggles, coupled with the O’s season-long consistency and the Yankees’ surprising success despite a glut of injuries, have created some intense competition in one of baseball’s...
John Lackey really can’t catch a break.
Lackey pitched very well in Thursday’s loss to the Twins, yet it’s one play that ultimately doomed his outing and overshadowed everything else that went right. What makes the whole situation stink even more for Lackey is that it isn’t the first time this season he’s had an unfortunate sequence bury him.
The Red Sox jumped out to a...
