“I’m looking forward to a new challenge after winning two Memorial Cups,” Boughner said. “I’ve made no secret that my goal is to be a head coach in the NHL, and joining (Arniel’s) staff is going to make me a better coach.”
Boughner was majority owner, president and coach of the Windsor Spitfires, an Ontario Hockey League team that just won the Canadian junior title for a second straight year. It’s one of the most lucrative junior clubs in Canada.
He’ll maintain his ownership stake in the Spitfires, Boughner said, but he was drawn to the Blue Jackets on two levels.
First, by the young, energetic staff being compiled by Arniel. Boughner joins Brad Berry and Dan Hinote, giving the Blue Jackets a staff of four former NHL players. Arniel is the oldest, at 47.
Second, Boughner said, the proximity of Columbus to Windsor was the key.
“I don’t have to uproot my wife or my four kids,” Boughner said. “And if I need to get home on an off day, it’s not a big deal.”
