On this date in 1987 Boston Red Sox pitcher Al Nipper beaned Darryl Strawberry of the New York Mets resulting in a bench-cleaning brawl during a spring training exhibition match between the two 1986 World Series contestants. Commissioner Peter Ueberroth, who attended the game, said, "It's kind of like the eighth game of the World Series. I wanted to come to this one."
