Right-hander Brad Penny has agreed to terms on a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants as a candidate to help in the bullpen.
Penny, who briefly pitched for the Giants down the down the stretch in 2009 and went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts, is scheduled to report to extended spring training in Arizona on Monday. He threw a bullpen session Friday afternoon at AT&T Park for Giants general manager Brian Sabean, manager Bruce Bochy and pitching coach Dave Righetti.
The 33-year-old Penny went 11-11 with a 5.30 ERA in 31 starts last season for Detroit. He signed with the Japan Pacific League's Softbank Hawks, going 0-1 with a 10.08 ERA in one start before getting released earlier this month.

DETROIT -- Less than 24 hours later, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was still raving about Justin Verlander's one-hit shutout of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"Thats probably the best game Ive ever seen pitched, and Ive seen a lot of games -- over 3,000," Leyland said. "I dont know how to explain that.
"Anybody who was here last night probably saw one of the best...
Detroit manager Jim Leyland says the criticism of his struggling team is to be expected.
The Tigers are 18-20 entering Friday night's game against Pittsburgh - a strikingly mediocre mark for a team that won the AL Central by 15 games in 2011 and added Prince Fielder in the offseason. While Motown waits and hopes the team will hit its stride, patience is running a bit thin.
You probably knew this already, but Justin Verlander is the best pitcher in baseball. The Tigers right-hander should have erased any doubt you may have had about that statement by nearly tossing his third career no-hitter on Friday night. Failing to recognize Verlander as such would be inaccurate, cruel and just plain dumb. A season after winning 24 games and becoming the first pitcher...
I feel like I can’t go a day without describing that day’s Giants game as “weird.” But this game was weird.
For the first 6 innings, this game was vintage 2011, except for the whole getting-on-base part. Tyson Ross looked bad, but the Giants couldn’t do anything with it. By the beginning of the 7th, it looked like Tyson Ross had had a good day, when one well-timed hit by...
The top play today is Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants -130.Sure the Giants have lost their last two games but they don't want to get swept by the Cardinals and they got their ace on the mound this afternoon.Adam Wainwright is a good pitcher but he can be had.MLB record is 1-1.
DETROIT -- Clint Hurdle grew up in Michigan and dreamed about watching one of his beloved Tigers pitch a no-hitter.
Friday night, he almost got his wish.
The Big Rapids native, now the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, could only watch helplessly as Justin Verlander took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against his team. Even when Josh Harrison's soft liner up the middle...
As no-hit bids go, this one was proceeding almost predictably.
Justin Verlander was commanding his pitches brilliantly on the mound. An overmatched Pittsburgh lineup looked powerless against him.
Then, with only two outs separating the Detroit ace from yet another rare achievement, Verlander threw a breaking ball just off the outside corner, and Josh Harrison hit a soft line drive...
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants have had defensive problems this season and know what it's like to make three errors in the game. So when the Cardinals were guilty of committing three miscues on Thursday, San Francisco took advantage of the extra opportunities. Brandon Crawford drove in a pair of runs, and although Matt Cain gave up more runs than usual, it was just enough run...
Watch reaction from Justin Verlander after his near no-hitter vs.
DETROIT (AP) -- Justin Verlander came within two outs of his third career no-hitter, allowing only Josh Harrison's ninth-inning single in the Detroit Tigers' 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. The 29-year-old Verlander, last year's AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, nearly became the sixth major league pitcher with at least three career no-hitters...
Final: Tigers 6, Pirates 0
WP: Justin Verlander (5-1, 2.14 ERA)
LP: Charlie Morton (2-4, 4.35 ERA)
This was a pretty exciting game to watch, as a baseball fan. However, as a Pirates fan, it was pretty unbearable.
Justin Verlander, owner of two career no-hitters was just mowing down batters. The Pirates, who put together a lineup including four hitters with a sub-.200 batting average...
The Detroit Tigers finally came home after a long road trip and welcomed in the worst team in baseball: the Minnesota Twins. After going 4-5 on the road trip and coming home with a .500 record, facing the worst team in baseball could be just what the doctor ordered for this struggling baseball club. …. [...]
Josh Harrison probably feels pretty good about himself right about now. The Pittsburgh Pirates‘ lead-off hitter saved his team from becoming the third to be no-hit by Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander with a bloop-shot to shallow centerfield, ruining 8.1 innings of spectacular pitching. Verlander settled for a 6-0 complete-game shutout instead. But it was [...]
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants took advantage of three Cardinals errors to end a two-game losing streak. Brandon Crawford drove in a pair of runs and although Matt Cain gave up more runs than usual, it was just enough run support to get the win as the Giants beat the Cardinals 7-5 on Thursday to split this brief two-game series. Cain (3-2) pitched six innings, allowing eight hits...
Justin Verlander has enough no-hitters already. Screw him. I’m pretty sure everyone on the planet saw him dominating the Buccos going into that game so is anyone really surprised at the outcome? First Pitch: 4:05 PM EST Where To Watch: Root Sports, MLB.TV, FS-D Drew Smyly, LHP (22) What a freaking name! It [...]
