Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes is well known for his frequent use of Twitter, taking advantage of the social networking service for everything from blasting the former replacement referees (who don't, in fact, work at Foot Locker) to more typical interaction such as chatting with fans. This time, however, he may well have stepped over the line. At about 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Spikes took to Twitter to send out an unsolicited opinion on social politics, comparing his fear of spiders to a fear of homosexuals, saying "I'd still scream if I found one in my bathtub!" While Spikes is certainly entitled to his opinion, and who knows how he actually feels about gay people -- it's certainly possible that Spikes isn't actually homophobic, and just has a terrible sense of humor -- his comments are completely uncalled for. And though of course Twitter chatter is protected free speech, that only prevents him from being criminally prosecuted, not sanctioned by his employer -- presumably any punishment would be decided upon by Bill Belichick and the Patriots' front office. Either way, Spikes' comments beg the question: was his throwaway opinion really worth risking a hit to the wallet or his eligibility on Sunday? I’m homophobic just like I’m arachnophobic.I have nothing against homosexuals or spiders but I’d still scream if I found one in my bathtub ! — brandon spikes (@BrandonSpikes55) October 10, 2012
