Brandon Tierney on the Redskins slur topic: While I'd like to think I had this perspective as a child, I've long known as an adult that as the world continues to evolve and change, dialogue is a vital tool. Exchanging ideas and intelligently conversing on sensitive topics is paramount to harmony and progress. I may not agree with you, but I will listen to you. A simple rule I've always adhered to as a person and as a broadcaster is if it's legitimately offensive to one, it must be reviewed. What I cannot stand in this country is when people feign outrage for political gain or other motivation. It's pathetic and it is everywhere. This morning (yesterday), we fielded at least 25 calls on the "Redskins" name issue, and specifically, four people identified themselves as Native-American...not one of them had an issue with the nickname "Redskins." Maybe this is oversimplification at its finest, but if its not offensive to them, why in the world should I be offended? Because people tell me to be offended? Bob Costas, who I like and admire, uses SNF as a pulpit for his own personal convictions, denouncing the word, referring to it as an "insult" and a "slur." Save it. Funny, but I never once heard that position during the 90's on NBC when referring to the Redskins. Guess he wasn't offended then, huh? If you are truly offended, let's talk. But if you're piling on aimlessly solely to satisfy an agenda, you are a clown with zero direction. Here's a compass, go find your way because you are lost.
