The Milwaukee Brewers have optioned right-hander Hiram Burgos to Triple-A Nashville, the club announced Saturday. Burgos, 25, has appeared in just two spring training games with the Brewers because he's been away participating in the World Baseball Classic for Puerto Rico. In two spring training starts, Burgos posted a 4.05 ERA in 6 23 innings, but he has yet to allow a run in 8 13 innings for Puerto Rico. He tossed 3 23 scoreless innings and picked up the win against Italy in Wednesday's second-round game that kept Puerto Rico alive in the tournament. Puerto Rico then defeated the United States in an elimination game Friday night, advancing Burgos and his home country to the semifinals. One of Milwaukee's top pitching prospects, Burgos broke out in 2012. He went 10-4 with a 1.95 ERA, 153 strikeouts and just 49 walks in 171 innings between three levels of the minor leagues, including having a 2.91 ERA in eight Triple-A starts. Because of the number of pitchers competing for a spot in Milwaukee's rotation, Burgos was unlikely to open the season in the big leagues. However, he did show on the world stage that he has the ability and that he will likely be one of the first in line to be called up in case of an injury or struggles of another starter.
