Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur’s NHL record run of starting 18 consecutive season openers with the same team could be about to end – and that doesn’t seem to matter to him. Brodeur said Tuesday he believes he’ll "probably" be ready to start the team’s regular-season opener Thursday night in Pittsburgh but doesn’t know yet if he will. Tuesday’s practice was Brodeur’s second back with the team after missing four days while attending his father’s funeral in Montreal. Devils coach Pete DeBoer held off again on naming his starting goaltender for the opener. Brodeur 41 already knows he won’t play both Thursday’s game and Friday’s home opener against the Islanders. DeBoer has for the most part avoided playing him on back-to-back nights as he’s gotten older. So Brodeur will wait to see whether DeBoer would prefer to give him another day to get ready and start Cory Schneider in Pittsburgh instead. "[We] haven’t really talked about it since I’m back as far as which of the two games I’ll play" Brodeur said. "For sure I’m not going to play both. It could be to give me an extra day who knows?" Although Brodeur said he has no preference which game he starts he sounded as if he wouldn’t mind starting the home opener. "It doesn’t matter" Brodeur said. "One way or the other I’m going to miss one of them but playing home is always fun." Brodeur has always been proud of being in net on every opening night since 1994-95 but he didn’t seem to care that his record run would end if he doesn’t start Thursday. "I know I must have a streak but I don’t know how long it is" Brodeur said. "It doesn’t matter. It’s not a big thing. It’s durability. I’m part of the lineup regardless." With a league-high 22 sets of back-to-backs being able to split those games between Brodeur and the 27-year-old Schneider who was acquired from Vancouver on June 30 will be a big plus for the Devils. They can’t employ a similar strategy with their older skaters though.
