In the National League Silver Slugger Awards announced Thursday night, the St. Louis Cardinals were shut out for the second consecutive season. At catcher, San Francisco’s Buster Posey took the honor, beating Yadier Molina and others. In the NL outfield, Carlos Beltran (three-time winner) and Matt Holliday (four-time winner) missed out as Ryan Braun, Andrew McCutchen and Jay Bruce took the 2012 hardware. In a head-scratcher, the latter, from the NL Central-champion Cincinnati Reds, received his first nod. Let’s look at a summary of the 2012 numbers put up by Bruce and the Cardinals duo. 2012 HR RBI BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+ Bruce 34 99 0.252 0.327 0.514 0.841 118 Beltran 32 97 0.269 0.346 0.495 0.842 128 Holliday 27 102 0.295 0.379 0.497 0.877 138 Apparently, the voting managers and coaches are like chicks, in that they dig the long ball. With the exception of Bruce’s 34 home runs and the associated bump in slugging, Beltran – and especially Holliday – clearly had ...

First three 2013 Cardinals spring training games announced

Earlier in the off-season, three Major League Baseball clubs, Oakland, Colorado and Philadelphia, reminded us that 2013 spring training is not too far away by announcing their tentative slate of February and March games. Sadly, the A’s and Rockies compete in the Cactus League, making them spring-irrelevant to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Phils, which train on the Gulf Coast of...

Contemplative Cardinal Guy

I'm not going to sugarcoat it... after all that drama in October, there is jack squat to write about in November. And maybe that's being kind.   The news wires are filled with the lamest Cardinals news and various Bleacher Report slideshows. The Cardinals front office is on vacation. And the free-agent signing period is still not open.    Long story short...

St. Louis Cardinals would likely have to pay steep price to land Asdrubal Cabrera

As the San Francisco Giants showed in their run to the 2012 World Series title, a good pitching staff is possibly the biggest factor in winning a championship. The St. Louis Cardinals have good, young pitchers, but they could also use an upgrade at shortstop. To make that improvement, the team will likely have to give up some of its stock of young pitching talent no matter what...

Wiber: Hiring rookie managers is risky business

Was the St. Louis Cardinals hiring of Mike Matheny last year the start of a new trend?  Is he a trailblazing hire that other general managers in MLB will mimic? With what is happening in the MLB and the recent hiring of Walt Weiss as the Colorado Rockies manager, the trend seems to be continuing. Last year, there were two "true" rookie managers that were hired, Robin...

Hot Stove Notebook: Why Not Michael Bourn?

The St. Louis Cardinals come into the 2012 offseason having won a World Series in 2011 and falling one game short of returning to the Fall Classic in 2012.  The team, for the most part, is set at almost every position.  They have publicly said they will be exploring the option of upgrading the middle infield, the only two spots on the team that anyone can easily look at and say...
