PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A valiant comeback fell short Saturday afternoon as the Mississippi State men's basketball team dropped a 73-63 decision to Providence at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

The Wildcats (9-3) and Bulldogs (8-4) accepted invitations Sunday, giving the New Year's Day bowl a less-than-marquee matchup. The Gator Bowl pitted Florida and Ohio State last season, an intriguing matchup that featured Urban Meyer's former team against his future team.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Mississippi State had nine players score, including 10 from sophomore Kendra Grant, but the effort wasn't enough as an Ance Celmina basket with six seconds left rallied Southern Mississippi to a 61-59 win Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.
Celmina's winner came just seconds after MSU's Jerica James tied the game with at 3-point basket with 21 seconds.
Such a fine time was had by all Bulldogs two years ago, why not do it all over again? So Mississippi State is happily taking a return trip to Jacksonville for New Years Day to play in the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl.
After three days without a game the Friars returned to action on Saturday at noon, competing in the Big East/SEC Challenge. Providence outlasted Mississippi State, 73-63.
Early in the week it looked like it would be Mississippi State, but it ended up coming down to Miami and South Carolina and JaQuay Williams will be in Columbia this weekend.
