Struggling Vancouver Canucks winger David Booth was in coach John Tortorella's doghouse Tuesday — and out of his lineup — and it came as no surprise to anyone who has seen him skate lately. Despite a three-game conditioning stint in the American Hockey League, Booth has been unable to regain the stride and explosiveness that once made him a bonafide power forward in the NHL. It appears that knee, ankle and groin injuries have caught up to him and he can no longer win puck races or beat people with speed. His play has been tentative and he has made no impact on most nights. Even he concedes that. “My explosiveness isn't where it was in the past,” said Booth, who was scheduled to miss suiting up against his old team, the Florida Panthers, on Tuesday. “That extra step, that's really the strength in my game. Without a doubt I can get it back. I've had other leg injuries and it comes back with time. It's just been a little bit longer this time than in the past. “Ob...

Vancouver Canucks: deal or no deal?

As the Vancouver Canucks offence has shriveled up and gone AWOL there has been mounting pressure on Mike Gillis to make a deal; from both the “pretend” and real media alike, and even more so from the fans. The preferred target of any deal would of course be an impact forward that could play in Vancouver’s top six or if they can’t land that, a third line center. There are...

Coach’s Challenge in the NHL?

The talk around town after the Vancouver Canucks dropped their 4th straight game in a row hasn’t been about the team’s performance but about whether coaches should have the ability to challenge a call on the ice, similar to the NFL.  The NHL has done a good job of embracing video reviews and is definitely not behind like the curve like FIFA and MLB, but I don’t think the NHL...

Canucks blame game – Panthers win the skills contest

‘Worst game of the year” for Canucks The recipe for an easy win was there for the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday – one of the NHL’s worst teams in town, no major injuries, the third game of a six game home stand with plenty of rest and a Panthers team on its longest trip of the season. The Canucks even managed the semi-impossible and scored more than one goal but it wasn...

Vancouver Canucks lack speed, scoring depth

So what’s wrong with the Vancouver Canucks? Not Roberto Luongo, that is for sure. The veteran goaltender has played solidly since reclaiming his lead role after the Cory Schneider trade.During a five-game losing streak the Canucks scored just five times. They hit rock bottom with a shootout loss to the visiting Florida Panthers. Here are some of the particulars: This team doesn’t...

John Tortorella rips lifeless Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella can’t believe his team lost to the Florida Panthers at home. The Panthers are terrible. They got coach Kevin Dineen fired and general manager Dale Tallon might be the next to go.The Canucks harbor Stanley Cup aspirations. So how could they end up in a shootout with the Panthers? How could they lose that shootout?“We sucked,” Tortorella...

Tortorella Not Happy With His Team’s Loss To The Panthers

from Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province, Wednesday morning this will echo throughout the Lower Mainland: “They lost the Florida freakin’ Panthers.” As should: Where were the Sedins? Where is Ryan Kesler? The Canucks played entitled, sloppy hockey and their coach let them have it in the intermissions and after the game. “We sucked, it was easily...

Time for Canucks to call 'Slump Busters'

So the Vancouver Canucks are in a slump. They've lost five straight and three straight at home. They have two 'loser points' in the five games but loser points are for losers. The Canucks couldn't protect third-period leads in either game. That's on them. This isn't the first slump in team history, though. Believe it or not, there have been plenty others...

Edmonton Oilers Twitter beef with the Vancouver Canucks

On November 19, the Florida Panthers visited the Vancouver Canucks in what should’ve otherwise been one of the most uninteresting NHL games of the season. However, what made this particular contest somewhat intriguing right off-the-hop was the return of former…Read more →The post Edmonton Oilers Twitter beef with the Vancouver Canucks appeared first on The Hockey Daily.

Roberto Luongo, Tim Thomas set to meet again

Let the tire pumping begin. Canuck netminder Roberto Luongo couldn't help but poke fun at himself on his twitter account Monday as he prepared to face the Florida Panthers and old nemesis Tim Thomas. Under his @strombone1 handle, Luongo wrote: “Just at Canadian Tire picking up a few essentials for tomorrow's big tilt...” Included in the tweet was a photo of an air pump...

John Tortorella Says Shows Like ’24/7′ Important for Hockey, Calls His Experience ‘Great’ (Video)

On the surfaced, it seemed like the type of thing that would drive John Tortorella up a wall. With the Rangers set to take part in the 2012 Winter Classic, his club would be documented in HBO’s behind-the-scenes show 24/7, which would give unprecedented access, the type of access that you would think would annoy Tortorella to no end. A couple of years later, however, the now Vancouver...

Canucks are just not good enough right now

The theory, if we understand it right, goes something like this. The best indicator of offensive performance is not goals. It's shots on goals. Goals are random. They're the results of a host of variables, some to do with skill, some with blind luck. Shots, on the other hand, are a more of a constant -- which makes them more meaningful. To generate a shot on goal, the...

Canucks vs Blue Jackets Game Preview – November 22, 2013

The Canucks are back at Rogers Arena Friday night for their second and thankfully final tilt of the season against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Will the Canucks suck again? Or will John Tortorella have scared the living hell out of them? Last Game: Most Canucks fans were left speechless following Tuesday night’s loss against the Florida (Yes, freaking Florida) Panthers. Having lost...
