Sports Report Arizona:
The Arizona Cardinals made their move towards finalizing their 53 man roster for the start of the regular season. The team has a 3pm MST deadline on Saturday to trim the roster from 75 to 53. The team made an initial wave of cuts earlier today with a few surprises. First the biggest news of the day, rookie LG Jonathan Cooper was placed on the injured reserve list, ending his 2013 season. The rookie suffered a broken left fibula against the Chargers. It was unsure if Cooper would be able to return for the end of the season but the move allows the team and the rookie to have a set plan for rehabilitation and recovery. It is the second time in consecutive seasons that a starting lineman has had to sit out the entire season due to injury. Daryn Colledge will move over from RG to replace Cooper with Paul Fanaika taking the RG position.
In a bit of a surprise, the Cardinals released one of their backup guards in Chilo Rachal. Rachal played 2012 with the Chicago Bears following a stint with the San Francisco 49ers. The former USC Trojan has struggled to perform on a consistent basis and did little during the preseason to cement his spot among the offensive line rotation. With Cooper’s move to the IR, it was believed Rachal’s spot was safe. Another slight surprise was the release of WR Charles Hawkins. The undrafted rookie performed well in practice and games this preseason and was believed to be one of the pass catchers going forward in 2013. Hawkins will be a definite watch to see if he is able to pass through waivers and be signed to the practice squad. The Cardinals seem content with entering the season with 5 WR on the roster.
The roster currently stands at 61 players ahead of the Saturday afternoon deadline. Below is the list of today’s cuts so far. We’ll update the list as it comes out.

Poor quarterback play was the Cardinals defining characteristic the past three seasons, but poor offensive line play wasnt far from grabbing the mantle.
