(via CardinalsFarm.com) The Baby Birds ended the night 3-3 with the GCL Cards rained out this afternoon. Memphis, Palm Beach, and Peoria were your winners and Springfield, State College, and Johnson City were on the losing end on Friday. A couple of young arms were on center stage Friday as Carlos Martinez started for Memphis and Zach Petrick for Palm Beach. Petrick shined in 6 innings, only allowing 5 hits and striking out 8. His ERA for Palm Beach is hovering near 0.35. I have been calling for his promotion for a couple of weeks. Could this have been his last start? Martinez was OK for Memphis. He allowed 1 run over 5 and 1/3 innings, but allowed 6 hits and walked 4, while striking out just 1. I believe this shows that when he has a rough night, he still manages to limit the opponent’s runs.  I still look for Martinez to find himself in St. Louis by season’s end. Here are quick game summaries followed by individual performances on Friday night: Read More…. Related articles St. Lo...

What do the Cardinals do with Jon Jay and center field?

Cardinals' Nation is abuzz about Jon Jay and his production (or lack thereof).  Many are calling for the Cardinals to make a change and soon. Bernie Miklasz wrote an article yesterday highlighting Jay's deficiencies on offense and defense and suggests that the Cards could look for an alternative on the trade market. John Nagel of CardinalsFarm suggests that the Cardinals...

Edward Mujica: Shaking off Yadier Molina led to first blown save

Edward Mujica had converted all 21 save chances he had this season prior to Thursday night. But the St. Louis Cardinals closer blew his first save of the season when he allowed the Los Angeles Angels to score three runs in the ninth for a 6-5 comeback win on July 4. Mujica allowed four hits [...]

Second-guessing pitching decisions part of the game

ST. LOUIS At least three times this season, Mike Matheny has made a late-inning pitching decision that has backfired on the Cardinals. At least three times, the second-guessers have had a field day questioning his moves. To review: On May 30, with a 2-1 lead, he brought in Mitchell Boggs to close out the Royals. Boggs gave up a game-tying homer to Jeff Francoeur on his second pitch...

Joe Kelly pitches six innings by day, plays Xbox with Twitter followers by night

The St. Louis Cardinals were hoping that Joe Kelly would be able to step in and fill the void in the starting rotation. He did so in 2012 as a rookie and after some dynamite long relief appearances out of the bullpen, Kelly seemed poised to handle the pressure. Kelly pitched alright on Saturday afternoon in the Cardinals 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins. He went six innings and allowed...

St. Louis Cardinals better without designated hitter

The St. Louis Cardinals lost one a spot for one of their many sluggers Friday when they mercifully returned to Busch Stadium to face the Miami Marlins.  The loss of the designated hitter in their return to National League play might actually help the team. The Cardinals 6-5 Independence Day loss on Thursday to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim finished the worst two-week stretch...

Spotted: Cardinals Fan @ Wimbledon

It might be the most prestigious tennis tournament at the world, but even the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon aren't off-limits to Cardinal Nation. Kudos to this man (shown several times on ESPN) rocking his New Era authentic head top. A couple of points: 1) Now that I'm looking at this, I'm pretty sure he isn't picking his nose and that it's just...
