This article is the work of guest blogger Felipe Diaz, a fine and enthusiastic young man from the great state of Wisconsin who is currently a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee studying Film Production and Marketing. I bet you thought mother bears were tough, well, they have nothing on the UFC ‘s Cat Zingano. At The Ultimate Fighter 17 finale Cat Zingano kneed and elbowed her way into the record books, becoming the first mother to win a fight in the famed octagon. How’s that for an obscure sports fact? Fighting against Miesha Tate in perhaps the sexiest MMA fight ever, Cat (what a perfect name for a female fighter) overcame a barrage of takedowns in a wild back-and-forth scrap to send “Cupcake” Tate home with a TKO loss at the 2:55 mark of the third round. At the post fight presser a visibly pissed Tate said that she felt the fight was stopped early. Clearly she was still a bit woozy after eating four-or-so knees to the face and a well placed elbow to the dome that sent her stumbling to the mat. I love a good fight as much as anyone, but I was actually glad referee Kim Winslow stepped in when she did; the white knight in me couldn’t stand to see Tate’s formerly pretty face pour out any more blood. Zingano looked great in dismantling her former role model, who she admitted to being afraid of after the fight, and as a reward for her victory, will face Rhonda Rousey for the UFC bantamweight title later this year.
