Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson was recently considered to be more valuable than Miguel Cabrera according to Keith Law of ESPN. Now I certainly don’t believe that to be true however Jackson’s value to the Tigers continues to increase with his vast improvement at the plate and his continued stellar defense in the outfield. That stellar defense was put on display Thursday afternoon when Jackson flashed the leather in what could’ve been a game saving catch. But is it the catch of the year? You decide… h/t: MLB.com

Jackson's diving grab saves Tigers

It wasn't "The Catch," but it certainly was "A Catch," and a very important one at that. Austin Jackson is giving the Detroit Tigers the best long-term center field play since the days of Mickey Stanley (1964-78), and the current occupant has a case for being better by dint of superior speed. Stanley seldom left his feet to make a catch, simply because...

Tigers, saved by Jackson catch, top Jays

Austin Jackson usually covers Comerica Park's spacious center field with calming ease, rarely leaving his feet or having to dive for a ball. Thursday night, when Anthony Gose lifted a fly to right-center with a man on second in the 10th inning, Jackson realized right away he would need a little extra effort to catch this one. ''It was one of those situations where if...

Game 2012.126: Angels at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 67-58, 2nd place, 2.5 back, 1 back for WC spot. Well, all good things must come to an end, and the Tiger win streak ended with a couple of misplays in the field, one bad pitch, and an incredible disappearing offense (or Greinke suddenly found himself again, pick your explanation). Cabrera and his taped ankle provided the lone run of the game, and the grumbling commenced...

Dombrowski and Leyland: It's pitching, stupid

What will it come down to? Of all the factors that will determine whether the Tigers win the Central Division, settle for a wild-card berth or miss the playoffs ... what will be the tipping point? Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski and manager Jim Leyland both agree that its starting pitching, but the GM included something else. Starting pitching and health are the two key...

Young gets Tigers offense going

DETROIT -- Irony, thy name is Delmon Young. Even more ironic is the fact that the Tigers need him. Before Saturday night's game, a reporter asked manager Jim Leyland about Young being the fans' new target of ire now that Brandon Inge and Ryan Raburn are no longer in town. "I think hes been hitting the ball pretty good recently, to be honest with you," Leyland...

Prince Fielder forgets to slide, gets tagged out in funny/sad video

Your browser does not support iframes. Prince Fielder is an outstanding hitter, but baserunning isn’t exactly his forte. That truth was on display Saturday when Fielder hit a shot into the right field corner off Dan Haren during the Angels-Tigers game. Prince seemed like he was worried about the throw from right field hitting him, so he didn’t remember to slide until it was...

Is Brennan Boesch Less Than 100% Healthy?

Are you hurt, or are you injured? That is the number one question for athletes around the world. Professional athletes have  to know the difference, have to know the limits of their own body, and have to know when to say hey I’m injured I need some time to get right physically. For Brennan Boesch this very question may just be the reason behind his struggles. Let us not forget...

Avila's hit gives Tigers win over Jays in 11

DETROIT (AP) -- Alex Avila's RBI single with two outs in the 11th gave the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, one inning after center fielder Austin Jackson kept the game tied with a spectacular catch. The Blue Jays had a runner on second in the 10th when Anthony Gose lifted what looked like a sure hit to the gap in right-center. But Jackson...

Verlander and the Tigers looking to sweep the Jays out of the D

Justin Verlander (12-7, 2.53 ERA) looks for his 13th win of the season as the Tigers look to sweep the Toronto Blue Jays in the series finale from Comerica Park. After edging out the Jays 3-2 Wednesday night, Verlander who in the words of Alex Avila pulled off his best “Houdini act” in his last appearance against the Orioles. During that outing Verlander walked four but held...

Tigers' Cabrera in lineup, Angels' Pujols out

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera is back in the lineup with a heavily taped right ankle. Cabrera was set to be the designated hitter Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels. Cabrera says he hopes to be healthy enough to play third base in the second game of the series on Saturday night. He left Thursday's game against Toronto during the second inning with soreness...

Tigers 5, Angels 3

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run double during a three-run eighth inning that sent the Detroit Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night. The Tigers trailed 3-0 before scoring twice in the sixth and taking the lead in their last at-bat. With men on first and third, Peralta hit a line drive just fair down the left-field line off Garrett Richards (3-3). Alex...

Porcello, Tigers lose opener with Angels

DETROIT (AP) -- Zack Greinke gave up one run and Howie Kendrick broke a scoreless tie with a two-run double in the sixth, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Miguel Cabrera's two-out solo homer in the eighth chased Greinke. Scott Downs got the Angels out of the inning by getting Prince Fielder to ground out and retired Brennan...

Angels-Tigers Preview

Both Detroit and Los Angeles received a bit of a scare in the last few days as Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols were forced out of games with injuries. While the Tigers are hopeful Cabrera will be back for Friday night's series opener, the visiting Angels don't seem as optimistic about Pujols' return. Cabrera left Thursday's 3-2, 11-inning win over Toronto in the...
