The Oakland A's got a little bit of a scare Thursday. Yoenis Cespedes, the cleanup hitter, came out of the game in the fifth inning with a sprained right wrist. Oakland's record with Cespedes in the lineup is an astonishing 70-40. Without him, the A's are 12-21. After the game, manager Bob Melvin said that the injury "doesn't appear to be as bad" as the right wrist sprain that caused Cespedes to miss one game on Aug. 4 (he pinch-ran in that one). Both wrist injuries were caused on slides. Cespedes also went on the disabled list in May with a left finger sprain, and he has had several small hand and wrist issues throughout the course of the season. The A's lost to the Los Angeles Angels 6-0 Thursday, ending the team's Oakland-record-tying road winning streak at 12 games. All of the Angels' runs came after Cespedes exited the game. Brandon Moss took over in left field, moving from first base, but both Seth Smith and Jonny Gomes are optio...

Brandon McCarthy's brain surgery scar

Amanda McCarthy tweeted a photo of her husband, Oakland A’s pitcher Brandon McCarthy, a week after his brain surgery. He’s walking down a street in San Francisco. It was his first day walking outside unassisted. Look closely and you’ll see the surgical scar on his shaved head.

Damn! A's Pitcher Brandon McCarthy's Scar After Brain Surgery is No Joke

Brandon McCarthy’s wife Amanda shared a photo on Twitter Wednesday that shows the scar on her husband’s head following brain surgery. McCarthy was struck in the head by a line drive from Erick Aybar last week and went to the hospital to have surgery to relieve swelling in his brain. The 28-year-old pitcher was released [...]

Pitching revived Athletics' Doolittle

After two years spent mostly recovering from a pair of knee surgeries, Sean Doolittle had his bags packed, his car loaded and his apartment cleaned out. He was finally ready to head from extended spring training in Arizona to Sacramento, sure in his mind that it would be a short stopover before he headed down to Oakland to play first base for the Athletics. Then, just a day before...

Pitcher Brandon McCarthy visits A's teammates

Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy stopped by the clubhouse to visit his teammates Friday, just more than a week after getting hit in the head with a line drive. He was his usual jokester and worked on a crossword puzzle. ''I told him he should fill in a crossword and put a bunch of letters backward,'' reliever Jerry Blevins said. ''He said, `I&...

Manny Ramirez 'Sometimes' Misses Baseball, But Now Has 'Incredible Peace'

Manny Ramirez really fell off the map after cutting short his comeback bid with the Athletics in June. Now, a much more religious, positive, appreciative Ramirez is back on the map, although he understands his baseball career could be over. USA Today's Jorge L. Ortiz tracked down Ramirez at the slugger's home at a gated community in Miami. Ramirez -- who Ortiz describes as...

Brandon McCarthy Tries Using Getting Hit in the Head as a Threesome Opportunity

Oakland A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy is the owner of one of the funnier and more enjoyable Twitter accounts in all of baseball. McCarthy also had the unfortunate luck of getting slammed in the face with a baseball off the bat of Angel Eric Aybar last week. The injury resulted in an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture that was repaired with two hours of surgery...

Coco Crisp makes superb diving catch

Oakland Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp made an amazing diving catch in the bottom of the fifth inning against the Angles, robbing catcher Chris Iannetta of possible extra bases. Crisp tracked down the line drive off the bat of Iannetta and made a full extension dive in right-center field to make the play. Oakland went on to win the game 4-1, while keeping a five-game lead...

The Time Jerry Blevins Had the Greatest Something

Odds are, as FanGraphs readers, you aren’t Oakland A’s fans, but you are at least somewhat familiar with Jerry Blevins. You know something about who he is and what he does for a living. You might have an idea of how good he is at it. To you, this isn’t weird; Blevins is a baseball player, and you know a lot about a lot of baseball players. To other people outside the baseball...

Malarchuk, Theismann and McCarthy: A Humbling Triumvirate of Danger

One and a half times. That is how many times I have been able to watch the Brandon McCarthy play where a darting Eric Aybar comebacker destroys the Oakland A’s pitcher’s skull. Holy mother of invisible friends, that hurts. The first time I saw it my stomach dropped and I got real dizzy. When the replay was shown again — this time in slow-motion — I anticipated the skull crushing...

A's rookie Griffin 6-0 after win over Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- A.J. Griffin threw eight scoreless innings, becoming the second Athletics pitcher in 85 years to start his major league career with six straight wins, and Yoenis Cespedes homered for Oakland in a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. The Athletics, who can sweep the four-game series by beating Angels ace Jered Weaver on Thursday, have...

A.J. Griffin Controls the Angels

There is no hitting A.J. Griffin this season. The 24-year-old rookie continued his remarkable run through the American League Wednesday night as he stifled the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to the tune of eight shutout innings. The swiftly rising righty struck out six Angles against six hits and no walks. The dominant outing lowered Griffin’s ERA to 1.94 to go with an splendid...

Orioles-Athletics Preview

The Oakland Athletics' remarkable turnaround over the last three months has them atop the AL wild-card race, and the West leaders are well within reach. The Baltimore Orioles are already enjoying the view from the top of their division. There's plenty at stake for these two surprising contenders as this series kicks off Friday in Oakland, where the first-place Orioles look...

Cespedes powers A's past Orioles

Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer while playing with a sore right wrist, and the AL wild card-leading Oakland Athletics beat Baltimore 3-2 on Friday night to prevent the Orioles from moving into sole possession of first place in the AL East. Jonny Gomes hit a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth to back A's rookie Tommy Milone in the opener of a key series between playoff contenders...
