Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers have begun talking a contract extension with LB Donald Butler. Talks between the team and Butler’s agent began on Saturday with the intent of extending the former 2010 third-round pick’s stay in San Diego as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. Butler, a rising star in the Charger’s defense, has become a key component of the team and has stated he wants to stay. He would become an unrestricted free agent if not re-signed before the start of the next league year. If Butler is to sign his extension this year it would be in the coming weeks, otherwise they’d  be put on hold once the season begins   The post Chargers & LB Donald Butler Discussing A Contract Extension appeared first on NFL Trade Rumors -.

Chargers' McCoy turns to Weddle to help change culture

SAN DIEGO, Calif -- During a 2012 season, in which many of his teammates and coaches underperformed, San Diego Chargers' free safety Eric Weddle was at the top of his game. The three-time All Pro selection (2010-12) and Pro Bowl participant from Alta Loma High School and the University of Utah was voted the Chargers' MVP by his teammates. He intercepted three passes to give...

San Diego Chargers 2013 NFL Season Preview

Introduction After averaging 11.2 wins per season from 2004-2009, the Chargers have averaged just 8 wins per season over the past 3 seasons. Norv Turner, Head Coach since 2007, gets a lot of the blame and was rightfully fired, but recently fired GM AJ Smith deserves more of the blame for their recent decline. The Chargers have done a terrible job of drafting and bringing in new talent...

Chargers get extension to avoid blackout

The San Diego Chargers have asked for and received a 24-hour extension to sell about 1,800 tickets to be able to broadcast Thursday’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. It’s ridiculous that the NFL’s blackout policy applies to preseason game. The game is considered sub-par to a common fan compared to a regular season game but both games’ tickets are sold at the...

Would be “major upset” of Max Starks beat King Dunlap for starting LT

Since the San Diego Chargers signed tackle Max Starks in free agency, it was assumed by many(okay all) that he was signed to take the starting job at the left tackle position away from King Dunlap. According to the U-T San Diego’s Michael Gehlken, it would be a major upset if that happens. I don’t know if this speaks more about the play of Max Starks or the overall lack of talent...

Antonio Gates shed some pounds, goal is the Super Bowl

The Hall-of-Fame game is going on right now and one player who will one day undoubtedly be inducted is San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates. The former undrafted free agent has struggled through serious foot injuries which has caused him to gain some weight ( well that and you know, food). This year, Gates has lost those extra pounds. Gates says the same thing said by every...

The San Diego Chargers have activated safety Brandon Taylor from the physically unable to perform list. He sustained a knee injury last season. Also Friday, left tackle Max Starks, who is battling King Dunlap for the starting job, got the day off. Dunlap has been the starter in the offseason workouts and through the bulk of training camp. But a hip injury cut into his practice...

Chargers S Brandon Taylor returns to practice

San Diego Chargers safety Brandon Taylor has returned to practice after tearing his ACL in December. Taylor tore his ACL in a game against the New York Jets in his first career start when his foot got caught on the turf as a Jets linemen shoved the second-year player. Taylor, who hasn’t played a snap of football since December, knows he has to ease back into it. I know I just...

San Diego Chargers 2013 Fantasy Football Projections

SDBR's Training Camp Report: 8/3

The Chargers held their annual Fan Fest on Saturday at Qualcomm Stadium and several players made the most of the new venue. While the rookies gave their all in their first practice inside Qualcomm Stadium, it was veterans like Philip Rivers, Malcom Floyd, Corey Liuget and Eric Weddle who made the big plays.

Mathis, Freeney contend with offseason break up

(Eds: Updates, corrects keyword line. With AP Photos.) By MICHAEL MAROT AP Sports Writer Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis were virtually inseparable as Colts teammates. Over the last decade, they shared a Super Bowl title, went to four Pro Bowls together, combined for nearly 200 sacks and became one of the NFL's most feared defensive tandems.
