I was talking to some friends yesterday about the wayward state of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Big Ben was hurt with some rib problems, and equally big and immobile Byron Leftwich was inflicted with some cracked ribs of his own, meaning the Steelers, who seem to have to dip deep into the quarterback depth chart annually, will be starting Charlie Batch at quarterback at Cleveland on Sunday. Charlie Batch. When watching him play with the Lions in the late 90s did you thing for a second that he would still be playing 14 years later and have 2 Super Bowl rings? Granted, he did it while a back up, but I am still incredibly impressed by his longevity. Naturally, longevity is a little it easier as a back up quarterback. That thought made me think… what quarterbacks are still around that have been playing since 2000 (or sooner). Here is the comprehensive list of active, old quarterbacks: - Charlie Batch - Tom Brady (1 game in 2000!) - Matt Hasselbeck - Peyton Manning That’s it. Congratulations Charlie Batch, you old goat. That’s some lofty company.

  • Charlie is ok in my book, I always wondered why they bothered signing Leftwich, instead of developing someone like Dixon or a new draft choice to eventually fill the shoes of Ben,, Is Leftwich who seems like a really nice fellow related to Tomlin ?
  • Let's not forget in the 2010 season the Steelers started out 3-1 without Ben behind Dixon and Batch as the quarterback. Also, Batch did a pretty good job filling in for Ben in December last year. Byron is beter than most think. If you look at the velocity of his throws compared to Ben's they are neck to neck. If you look at how quickly he releases the ball compared to Ben, he is neck to neck. No he is not Big Ben by any means, but with practice and more game time he won't be so bad.
