Kellen Davis showed a lot of promise as a player for the Chicago Bears in his limited action.  At one time it was thought that Davis could consistently catch 40 to 50 balls a season and be a very good TE threat for the Bears.  He had shown some solid ability speed good hands and he's a big target that can jump. This was supposed to be the year the Davis broke out and replaced the production of the departed Greg Olsen.  Instead Davis fell on his face and had an horrible season, a season that should cost him his job after signing a two-year contract extension. On the season Davis had 44 targets and eight drops to go with 19 receptions for 229 yards.  I really don't need to carry the article beyond that point.  Davis dropped balls in critical situations that ruined drives and were gut punches to the offense. Perhaps more than any other player on the roster, he represents the failure of the offense and the 2012 season. No I'm not putting the blame on him, but his play is representative of the failure on offense as a whole.  Davis wasn't targeted much and then at points when Cutler did trust him enough to throw him the ball he would seemingly come through with a critical drop. The Cowboys game was emblematic of Davis' success and failure on the season.  He had three receptions for 65 yards in the game and a key drop.  In that game you could see all of Davis' potential, but all that he has failed to do as a TE.  Despite some signs of promise throughout his career, his weaknesses have become to numerous to overcome. Davis' career in Chicago should be over, there is no reason for him to remain on the roster.  He was slow and plodding attacking the seams, showed no ability to get open other than the occasional straight line seam route and dropped far too many balls when contested.  The Bears need a major upgrade at the TE position away from Davis. As a blocker, Davis was better in his overall performance this season.  However the Bears need far more than a blocker.  They need another weapon for Jay Cutler, especially since that's the direction most teams in the NFL are going with their TEs.  Fortunately there's a bounty of players likely available in both free agency and the draft.  The only question is which direction should the Bears go when they decide to address making the offense more complete.
