Found April 06, 2013 on Rumors and Rants:
I’ve been to Wrigley Field. While it’s nice that it hasn’t changed much since it was first built a zillion years ago, the place is actually kind of a dump. I guess it was easier to impress people in 1914.  The team really needs to renovate it, which is exactly what they’re looking to do. The city of Chicago and the Ricketts family, who own the Cubs and Wrigley Field, are close to a $500 million deal that would include $300 million in renovations to the famed landmark that would be paid for entirely by Cubs ownership. This is sort of good news. Look, I really hate the Cubs and the corporatization of nostalgia as much as the next guy. While “throwback” parks were really cool when they were built, they’re also really annoying for their soulless exploitation of the history of baseball. Citi Field, I’m looking in your direction. And everyone praises the way the Red Sox have renovated Fenway Park, but there has still been quite a bit of teeth-gnashing over things like the seats on top of ...

Matt Garza pushing for early May return

ATLANTA — Matt Garza rejoined the Cubs on Friday, one day after his first bullpen session since mid-February, and said he was already penciling himself into the rotation for May. "I'm pushing for early May and pushing hard, too," Garza said. The right-hander is on the disabled list with a strained left lat, which he first felt during a live batting-practice session...

Carlos Marmol loses job as Cubs closer

Chicago Cubs closer Carlos Marmol has been pulled from his ninth inning role after his first blown save of the year last night in Atlanta. Kyuji Fujikawa will replace Marmol as the Cubs' fireman, according to reports. Marmol is actually reportedly taking the demotion well, stating "You can't complain about it. They say it's better for me and for the team. I&...

Kyuji Fujikawa to replace Marmol as Cubs closer

Following Saturday’s meltdown the Chicago Cubs have removed Carlos Marmol from the closers role. Marmol blew a save after allowing two solo home runs in the inning. Marmol will be replaced by 32-year-old Kyuji Fujikawa according to Chicago Tribune writer Paul Sullivan. Entering the eighth inning the Cubs held a 5-1 lead over the Braves. Fujikawa pitched the eighth inning for the...

New Wrigley Field plan has Chicago Cubs rooftoop owners hopping mad

If stakeholders agree on the proposed Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field renovation deal, some owners of nearby rooftops may take to legal means to protect their rights.  The new plans call for a Jumbotron in the iconic left field that will admittedly obscure the view of rooftops in that direction“minimally” sources close to the deal stated according to the Chicago Sun Times.  Additional...

AP Sources: Cubs, Chicago close to Wrigley deal

Chicago Cubs fans may have something to cheer about, after all. Two people with knowledge of the negotiations between the Ricketts family that owns the Cubs and the city say the two are near an agreement on a $500 million project at Wrigley Field. The people spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet finished and they are not authorized to publicly discuss...

Fujikawa replaces Marmol as Cubs closer

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum says Carlos Marmol is out as closer and rookie Kyuji Fujikawa will take over the role. Marmol blew a save opportunity in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves when brothers B.J. and Justin Upton hit solo homers in the ninth inning. Sveum made the decision before Sunday's game. Fujikawa didn't fare much better in a three-run eighth...

Dontrelle Willis signs with independent Long Island Ducks

The D-Train is either running out of steam, or is just about to leave the station. I’ll choose the later.  Dontrelle Willis is a former 20-game winner, was the 2003 National League Rookie of the Year, and was one of the most charismatic pitchers the game has ever seen. He had a smile that could light up a room and his excitement could be felt throughout the ballpark.  Within...

Being a Cubs Parent

Today, while the Cubs were about to lose their final game in Atlanta and get swept before their home opener, I was driving the family over to my son’s friend’s birthday party and listening to the last of the Cubs’ ninth on the radio. The Cubs recorded the final out and I switched off the radio.  I told my son that the game was over.  Let’s check in on the conversation that...

Brewers look to spoil Cubs' home opener

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Cubs are on their second closer, and the season is only a week old. The Milwaukee Brewers are missing two key sluggers, and a third is struggling with a neck issue. This should be quite the opener at Wrigley Field. Chicago and Milwaukee are dealing with some early challenges heading into the first game of the season at the Cubs' longtime home on Monday...

It’s only weird if it doesn’t work

I have a confession to make. The reason the Cubs are 2-1 right now has little to do with the outstanding starting pitching in the Pirates. It has little to do with, lets be generous and call it, inconsistent offense. A solid bullpen with the exception of Carlos Marmol also has had little influence. No the 2-1 and currently tied for first place Chicago Cubs has everything to...

Series Preview: Cubs (2-1) at Braves (2-1)

The Cubs somehow managed to scratch together enough runs to take a series from the Pirates. Now they head to relatively warm Atlanta for another three game set. Atlanta beat up on their aging divisional rivals, the Phillies in their opening series.  Team Overviews Here's how the teams looked in 2012. NL Ranks in parentheses.   Cubs Braves wRC+ 80 (16th) 92 (11th) BSR...
