Christian Ponder will face competition this off-season, it’s just who will it be? One name being kicked around is Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel. He’s a legitimate option as he’ll become a free agent and the Vikings wouldn’t have to give a draft pick for him, and though a woeful year in 2012, he still has some upside. The sayings, “He’s neither as good or bad applies to Cassel. He was able to take the Chiefs to the playoffs in 2010 and led the 2008 New England Patriots to an 11-5 record. In January 2011, Cassel was named as an alternate to the Pro Bowl in place of an injured Tom Brady. However, the past two seasons has been disastrous for Cassel, and the recent acquisition of Alex Smith has his days numbered in Kansas City. According to Chris Wesseling of NFL.com, the Viking would be a good fit and would provide the type of competition to push incumbent Ponder to have to hustle to keep his job. Wesseling writes: ‘Wesseling cautions not to rule out the Vikings as competition for Cassel's services. Although head coach Leslie Frazier has maintained that Christian Ponder is his quarterback, the Vikings are on the lookout for a veteran to "teach" and "push" the young starter.’ var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
