Chip Kelly Is Saying All The Right Things.

Posted April 17, 2013

On a 4-12 roster nobody should feel they have a thing locked up. Nobody should ASSume they are going to be the starter, because they started for Andy Reid or because they make more money than the other guy. In other words the Eagles open competition extends beyond the quarterback position. It's for the entire football team.

“It’s difficult at times to make an evaluation on some guys just watching film,” Kelly said. “[On film], you’re just kind of watching athletic ability and going through it. But when you see them on the field for three straight days, running around doing things, it gives you a better understanding of what your team is and kind of where they are.” Chip Kelly on his players.

In other words players better come in working hard for these next few days or they could find themselves looking at the new young rookie waiting in the wings to take their place. In other words on this roster Chip Kelly has no sacred cows. At least not yet. Players are going to have to work and work hard in this new uptempo offense. So when you go to the Eagles website and look up the depth chart (if they even show one) just ignore it, because right now it's rather meaningless. On a side note Trent Edwards asked to be released by the Eagles. Edwards was still in the hunt, but he chose not to compete. Nobody wants a quitter right?

For all of you people ASSuming Nick Foles doesn't fit Chip Kelly's system and he isn't part of Chip Kelly's plans, well Kelly has a message SPECIFICALLY for you: "You're making way too much of it," Kelly said. "The best quarterbacks are the best quarterbacks. We'll find a way, no matter who our quarterbacks are, to put a game plan in where they can be successful."

Do you get it yet? Do you see it yet? Chip Kelly isn't bound by the need to force players into an offense they aren't capable of running (see Andy Reid), rather he is going to place his best players in what he believes will be the best position to succeed.

It seems under Kelly players understand everything they knew about the past needs to stay there. You may have been the starting wide receiver last season, but that means nothing now. [He did say that every player "knows where they stand." Kelly called the depth chart, though, "more of a seating chart than it is a depth chart."]

Chip is making it clear. This is a 4-12 football team learning a new offense and defense. What they did in the past is irrelevant. All that matters is how you compete now. For the past three years the Eagles have been the Champions of talking, but now it seems under Chip Kelly talk is cheap and working is what matters most. All Eagles fans should be extremely excited by this news.

  • When it comes to Chip Kelly it's not just coach speak. Nobody is a mortal lock to be a starter right now. Chip also isn't in any hurry as some may ASSume to pick any starters for any positions: "It's April 16, so we're not playing until next September," Kelly said at the NovaCare Complex. "We're going to use the full available time for us to make a full evaluation of what it is. I think it fosters competition. I think those guys love competition."

So Eagles fans sit back, relax, enjoy the show, and may the best men win.
  • Listening to a recent comparison between Andy Reid's response to the draft and Chip Kelly's I have to say it seems like the Eagles have selected a coach who is at least capable of thinking on his feet. All these years of shuddering, stammering, and "do a better job" coach speak are thankfully over. There were no fireman, waiters, or skiers in this draft. The Eagles selected football players. They didn't try to prove they were smarter than anyone else unlike Reid. They just used their picks to make quality choices.
  • Thats the least a paying customer deserves is decent explanations. The arrogance with which the franchise operated under Reid wont be forgotten until they win. Thats the price Lurie pays for supporting that kind of behavior for so long. I dont think fans are letting him operate with such impunity anymore. They expect something for their money including honesty.
  • Well Kelly is certainly "doing a better job" of communicating with the fanbase than Reid ever has. To be honest WINNING is all that matters. Winning can help people forgive a lot of the crap that has gone on lately with this team.
  • As A University of Oregon football fan and watching and listening to Kelly I learned a lot, One this guy lives and breathes football, plus he wont care what anyone says except his coaches and players!
he's his own man. heck he didn't give a rats behind on what the team wore on gameday? and If you know anything about Oregon football and the many colors and jerseys we have ??? Chip couldn't have cared less? why??? he had a team to coach?? so there you have it? I guess??
  • The next few years will tell us a lot about how Kelly will be able to handle the media. He can say a lot, but if he eventually does what Reid did then it will be obvious that he does care about what the media says. If Reid didn't care about what the media says then he wouldn't have run from the WIP morning show for so many years.
