Anthony Lawrence (2015) gave his verbal commitment to the Miami Hurricanes basketball program on Monday after visiting the school and talking with head coach Jim Larrañaga. The junior from Lakewood High School (St. Petersburg) originally committed to UCF, but the small forward withdrew his commitment last fall. “Just committed to the University of Miami #Blessed” Lawrence posted on Twitter Monday afternoon. At around the same time, Miami assistant coach Eric Konkol, who was widely responsible for recruiting Lawrence, posted, “#WelcomeToTheU” Lawrence’s father, also named Anthony, played basketball for the Hurricanes from 1991-1993. He told the Tampa Bay Times that he was surprised by his son’s decision, but saw that he and Larrañaga got along well. Lawrence Sr. is also the head basketball coach for the Lakewood Spartans. Lawrence is listed at 6’5″ and 180 lbs. The Spartans were the runner-ups in the Class 5A Florida State Championship this year. He led the tournament with 25 rebounds through two games. He was tied for second in scoring, averaging 18 points per game.
