During the 2012 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns shocked almost everyone by selecting 28-year-old quarterback Brandon Weeden with the 22nd pick in the first round. Weeden went on to earn the team’s starting job as a 29-year-old rookie, but produced disappointing results. Now the Browns could shock the NFL again by putting Weeden on the trade block after just one season. The National Football Post reported on Friday that there was buzz around the league that the Browns could look to trade Weeden this offseason. The report claims that the team’s new management tandem of Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi aren’t fans of Weeden and would like to get some value in return for him while they still can. I’m not sure I buy this story completely and it might just be a case of the Browns floating a rumor to see if they get any responses. That said, I wasn’t sold on Weeden before or after last season and am not sure he’s the answer under center in Cleveland. As a rookie in 2012, Weeden completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 3,385 yards, with 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. His quarterback rating of 72.6 ranked 29th in the NFL out of the 32 signal-callers who qualified. For a guy who began his rookie season as a 29-year-old, much more was expected from Weeden. He simply wasn’t as polished as advertised. While his offensive line didn’t help matters, there was also very little evidence to suggest the Oklahoma State product is a franchise-type quarterback. One thing that could work in Cleveland’s favor is the fact that the quarterback class in the 2013 draft is expected to be very weak this year. Guys like West Virginia’s Geno Smith, USC’s Matt Barkley and N.C. State’s Mike Glennon aren’t exactly blowing anyone’s skirts up. That could make a guy with experience, like Weeden, attractive to a quarterback-starved team. If the Browns did ship Weeden out of town, that would leave only Colt McCoy on the roster, unless they add another passer via free agency, a trade or the draft. This is one we’ll keep monitoring for you as the story develops.
