COLUMBUS- After coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game, the Columbus Clippers suffered a defensive meltdown in the ninth to hand the Pawtucket Red Sox a 3-2 win Tuesday. Clipper closer Preston Guilmet had a runner on first with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before three fielding errors paved the way for a Pawtucket victory. With one down, first baseman Drew Sutton reached on error by third baseman Matt Lawson who mishandled the ball on his transfer. Designated hitter Bryce Brentz then grounded to short but second baseman Cord Phelps dropped the force out. Third baseman Brandon Snyder followed with another grounder to shortstop Juan Diaz but the throw to first was wide right, allowing the eventual game-winning run to score. "We had a bad inning and gave them extra outs," manager Chris Tremie said. "You know (Pawtucket's) run and not being able capitalize in the end with a couple of runners on. Just a combination of al...

MLB News: Chris Perez’s return from DL delayed

Potentially unsurprising after being blown up in Double-A last night, Indians closer Chris Perez will not return to the team’s active roster on Friday as originally scheduled. In his second rehab outing, his first with Akron, Perez allowed five runs on three home runs in just one inning on Tuesday night. He struck out two batters, including the first hitter on just three pitchers...

Indians call up Chisenhall, option Langwell

Today the Cleveland Indians have recalled third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall from Triple-A Columbus and optioned right-handed pitcher Matt Langwell to Columbus.  Chisenhall, 24, has been with Columbus since May 13th where he hit .390 (41-for-105) with 8 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs and 26 RBI in 27 games for the Clippers (.455/.676/1.132).  Since May 29th he has hit .467 (28-for...

Long term planners at the Corner of Carnegie and Ontario

8-13. 18-4. 4-16. 5-2. There is your Cleveland Indians in numbers, as I stand staring here at the Corner of Carnegie and Ontario. They started the season 8-13. During this stretch, the offense was prone to big innings, but not much else. The starting pitching was suspect, but the bullpen was as dangerous as they come. The next phase of baseball was dominant. The starting pitching...

Four-run fourth lets Thunder power past Aeros 5-3

AKRON, OH -- The Akron Aeros (34-36) squared the ball up well Wednesday night, totaling 13 hits, but the team failed to score enough runs to overcome the Trenton Thunder (35-35), falling 5-3 at Canal Park. The game featured plenty of offense with Akron and Trenton combining for 25 hits, though both teams failed to actually get many runners across the plate. The problem, according...

Indians' Nick Swisher scheduled to return Saturday

The Cleveland Indians could use some good news.  After a hot start followed by a cold streak that may have cost them their season, the Indians need something positive.  And they'll get it in the return of Nick Swisher Saturday.  He is progressing well and expected to return this weekend after missing about a week with a sore shoulder. Nick Swisher scheduled to take BP...

Indians' Swisher returns to lineup

Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has returned to the lineup after missing six games with a sore left shoulder. The switch-hitter is batting cleanup against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Swisher hasn't played since June 15. He's been playing with the shoulder injury for most of the season and received a cortisone injection last week. The injury has affected Swisher'...

Sailing with the Clippers: 6/13/13 - 6/19/13

Just when Clippers fans didn’t think it could get any worse, it did. Yet again, Columbus finished the week with a losing record (2-5) and have plummeted to 34-39 overall. After splitting a four-game series at Charlotte, the Clippers have lost three in a row to the Pawtucket Red Sox and are in danger of getting swept for the fifth time this season. Columbus has sank to third place...

Rank Relief: Cleveland goes Cleveland

Shaw hides his face after Hosmer ties the game with a double The Cleveland Indians had been having a fairly nice year compared to expectations.  After today they are trailing the Royals by a half game.  It looked like Cleveland was in line for a win after Carlos Carrasco worked 7 shutout innings.  The 8th inning proved to be a little trickier.  After putting a man on second,...

Notes from the Wigwam: Tribe shows improvement

Slowly but surely, it appears as if the Cleveland Indians may be coming around. The Tribe went 4-2 during this past week and won two series against both the Texas Rangers and the Washington Nationals. While their record of 34-34 is still far from great, the Tribe is still just 4 ½ games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the American League Central. The key for the Indians...

6/18 Recap: Royals 3 - Indians 4

Roster Update: Desparation forced the Indians to finally bring Lonnie Chisenhall back despite the fact that he has been completely destroying AAA pitching for the past month. Matt Langwell was sent back to Columbus to make room for Lonnie, bringing the Indians bullpen down to the standard seven pitchers. Player of the Game Ubaldo Jimenez threw 5.1 innings of two hit baseball...

Some news, notes, and thoughts from my Indians notebook… Better days lie ahead? The Indians just finished off a brutal 25-game stretch against some of the best teams in baseball.
