Edwin Jackson pitched eight solid innings, David DeJesus drove in three runs and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-1 on Wednesday night to salvage the finale of the four-game series. Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer and Starlin Castro belted a solo shot as Chicago closed out a 14-13 July, its first winning calendar month since it went 15-10 last July. Jackson allowed one run and eight hits in his longest outing of the season, staying in the game after a 66-minute rain delay in the sixth inning. Jonathan Lucroy had two doubles for Milwaukee, driving in Rickie Weeks with a grounder down the first-base line in the eighth. Jeff Bianchi and Caleb Gindl also had two hits apiece. The Cubs bounced back from a frustrating doubleheader sweep on Tuesday, when they blew late leads in each game. They also dropped the series opener on Monday when the Brewers scored five times in the ninth inning of a 5-0 victory. Rizzo went deep in the third, driving a 3-1 pitch from Wily Peralta...

Sveum: Samardzija deal 'not realistic'

Chicago Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija has shrugged off trade rumors and manager Dale Sveum said Sunday that any rumor about his right-hander being dealt is “silly.” Yet the Cubs listened to Arizona when the Diamondbacks asked their asking price for Samardzija and other teams have inquired as well. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heymnan wrote the only reason the Cubs “are looking around...

In the real world of baseball business it is incumbent upon top executives to listen to offers on any and all of their players. In the sensitive world of long-term contracts and player control the issues can...

Trade Values: David DeJesus

This morning Ken Rosenthal said that the Cubs were shopping David DeJesus and Nate Schierholtz. I did a trade value on Schierholtz a few weeks ago, noting that it would probably take a Grade B hitting prospect to land him. Let’s take a look at the value of DeJesus, which will provide a better opportunity to compare both players. NOTE: The purpose here isn’t to suggest the Pirates...

Former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein’s Brookline Mansion Up for Sale (Photos)

Theo Epstein left the Boston Red Sox about two years ago, but he didn’t leave Boston for good. During the MLB offseason, he and his family would retreat to their Chestnut Hill, Mass., home and take in the sights of the city Epstein once helped bring the Commissioner’s Trophy to. Now, it seems as if Epstein is ready to sever all ties. The Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations...

Happy Trade Deadline Day

TheJedi have already knocked out a number of trades that today shouldn't bring too much excitement, but there's still a few pieces left on the trading block. The most likely is Nate Schierholtz whom Jayson Stark reiterates is the most likely Cub to be dealt today. The Pirates and Rangers seem like the most likely spots at the moment. The Milwaukee Brewers have saved the majority of their runs for the late innings and are on the verge of their first four-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs.
