The Pirates finally placed Andrew McCutchen on the DL today, confirming that leaving him on the roster for the past week was a mistake. Of course, the move was retroactive to August 4th, meaning he will be eligible to come return on the 19th, but the Pirates wasted his roster spot for six games – and an extra man might have come in handy during three losses in that stretch.
Meanwhile, there’s still no real update on Neil Walker, who isn’t in the lineup Monday. Until he is able to play again, the Pirates are wasting his roster spot – although I guess it’s more likely that he’ll be able to play within 15 days. Then again, everyone also thought he was good to go on Saturday, but he felt more pain the next day after a pinch hit appearance.
Casey Sadler was called up to take McCutchen’s roster spot. They were short a pitcher (since Pedro was reinstated when Ernesto Frieri was DFA’d the other day) but this is still a puzzling move – Sadler (who was more a convenient choice than a deserving choice, since he’s on the 40 man and Gerrit Cole should return later this week) seems to profile as a long reliever in the majors, and the Pirates already have two of those. Now they have three guys stowed in the back of the bullpen that they won’t want to use in anything close to a tight situation. They also have Jayson Nix getting regular starts, and Pedro Alvarez is virtually useless as he works toward a transition to first base. That leaves the current bench as follows: backup catcher (never used), Pedro for one PH appearance per game, Michael Martinez, and Gaby/Ike. Yuuuuuck.
