Mark Cuban is known for speaking his mind no matter what others may think of him. Cuban says things from time to time to make headlines in the paper. (Or on Twitter) Recently the Mavericks owner said that he would be open to draft NCAA Women’s Basketball star Brittney Griner. Griner, who plays for Baylor, has been a dominant player. She is known for her size and spectacular skills on the court. She so far has scored 3,283 points and blocking 748 shots in her career. She has dunked the ball from time to time. Cuban told reporters that he would think about drafting Brittney in the upcoming draft. If Dallas does not draft her Cuban said he would bring her in to the summer league team for the Mavericks. He went on to say, “If she is the best on the board, I will take her. I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.” Brittney responded to Cuban’s words on Twitter when she wrote, “I would hold my own! Let’s do it.” Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki spoke about Griner’s chances making the team. He told reporters, “You’re kind of caught between a 3 and a 4, its tough. You’ve got to be fast and athletic at that spot. You’ve got to be able to shoot. You’ve got to be able to go by people, guard people on the other end, chase people off of screen-and-rolls and post up. It’s tough, it’s tough.” If she does join the summer league for Dallas I am guessing that there would be a Tim Tebow like following at any summer league game she would play in. Griner is always followed by the media so that would not be something new for her. The question is what is the real reason for Cuban doing this? Is it to sell tickets or that he believes she could play in the NBA? Cuban went on to say, “She’d still have to make the team. I’m not going to carry her just to carry her. I don’t think, anyways. But I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to giving her the opportunity.” So that response looks like he is all in on having her try out to see if she can make the team. Yet when he was asked if her tryout would create more sold tickets, he replied, “It would, wouldn’t it? See how she could do? That’d sell out a few games.” Always the salesman Cuban would love to try anything. I hope that if Brittney does try to make it in the NBA that the team that brings her in believes that she could make the team and not just look to create a media circus.
