Found April 13, 2013 on The Majors Detroit:
Despite signing Jose Valverde to a minor league contract and him lighting it up in extended spring training work… Ok the big potato threw a scoreless inning today against the Atlanta Braves were he walked one and struck out one in what sounds like vintage Valverde fashion. Anways… aside from Valverde, Bruce Rondon in Toledo and a struggling Tigers bullpen thus far it sounds as though Tigers manager Dave Dombrowski is still in the closer’s aisle of the MLB acquisition market. During an interview with Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio, Domrowski said he has spoken with an opposing GM within the last week. When I asked Dave Dombrowski the last time he talked to another GM about a closer he responded “this week” Sirius 209 XM 89 — JIM BOWDEN (@JimBowdenESPNxm) April 12, 2013 Obviously it’s still very early for the Tigers bullpen… too early for panic but this is still a problem that should’ve been addressed in the offseason, especially if you were going into Spring Training with a rookie ...

Jose Valverde confident, wrong about last season

He also struck out a batter and did not give up any runs.   After the outing, Valverde spoke to the media [quotes via The Detroit News]:  "You have to have confidence," said...

Tigers great Willie Horton tells his '42' story

DETROIT Willie Horton was 4 years old when Jackie Robinson broke baseballs color barrier in 1947. Horton was the youngest of 21 children in a coal-mining family in Arno, Va., and remembers his father, James, boarding a bus with some friends for a trip to see Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers play the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field. Papa would tell me all about Jackie, Horton...

Game 2013.10: Tigers at A’s

Yes, the game post picture is a mite creepy. But then again, it is a 10:00 pm EST game, and creepiness is thematically apt. Whenever the Tigers play at Oakland, there are three unavoidable questions that come to mind: 1) Will anyone stay up late enough to watch? 2) Who named O.co Coliseum, and how much would it cost to rename it? And what civil or criminal remedies are available...

Tigers use small ball to take series from Jays

DETROIT They were the Go-Go Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers leading the majors with a .313 batting average can club teams into submission with Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez. But they beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 11-1, with 14 singles, one double and one triple. They won by Cabrera stealing third and hitting his first triple since 2010. They...

Will there ever be a right time to trade Miguel Cabrera?

The Detroit Tigers are sitting pretty well in terms of how their immense payroll is structured. Sure they have a $150M payroll, 5th highest in the Major Leagues, but they have a clear two-year window to win a championship. That includes the 2013 season, and 2014 as well. After that,  a high payroll and aging [...]

Darvish smells Nelson Cruz's broken bat

Okay, there are a ton of questions related to this GIF, but we’ll try to break it down. We’re not sure if it passes the sniff test. Nelson Cruz broke his bat in the sixth inning of Saturday night’s Rangers-Mariners game, according to GoldAndOrSmith.com. The top half of the bat wound up back in the Rangers’ dugout, the bat was passed to Yu Darvish, and for some reason, he...

Denard Robinson's first pitch at Tigers game

Denard Robinson threw out the first pitch at Tuesday's Tigers game -- and it was terrible. The ball traveled maybe 45 feet out of sympathy and bounced the rest of the way into Drew Smyly's glove. Honestly, it looked more like a spike than a toss.  You be the judge:  Lucky for us, an anonymous NFL scout broke it down:  11W: So, with an arm like that, what...

Tigers 11, Blue Jays 1

Miguel Cabrera set the tone in the first inning, stealing third before the opposing pitcher even started his motion. On a chilly day when the ball didn't appear to be carrying, the Detroit Tigers kept their legs moving. Cabrera tripled and scored twice, and the Tigers knocked Josh Johnson out of the game with a five-run second inning en route to an 11-1 victory over the Toronto...

Tigers' Fielder locked in to start the season

What started as a joke in spring training is quickly turning into reality. After Justin Verlander won the American League MVP in 2011 and Miguel Cabrera won the award in 2012, people began to speculate on which Tiger could be next to take the prize. Naturally, the first name mentioned was Prince Fielder. Fielder, 28, in his first season with the Tigers last year, which was also...
