Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz spoke with USA Today Sports about his feelings on the Ryan Dempster and Alex Rodriguez fiasco. “I didn’t like it. I don’t think it was the right thing to do,” Ortiz said. “But we don’t all think alike, and the guy who did it, Dempster is a great guy.” Not only does Ortiz think that Dempster’s actions were wrong, but he doesn’t want to give the Yankees any motivation. “It’s not that I didn’t think it was right because Alex and I are friends, because once you cross the white lines, everyone’s on their own,” David said. “But we’ve got Tampa right on our heels, and that pitch woke up a monster in the Yankees’ team at that moment. You saw how the game ended up. CC Sabathia was throwing 91 and started throwing 96. Alex later hit one way out there. You’re talking about a good team that you can’t wake up. But we learn from our mistakes.” Currently the Red Sox are in first-place in the AL East. The Yankees have won nine of their last eleven games and are inching back into the wild card hunt. Last Sunday could possibly be the moment Yankees fans look back on as the flame that was lit under their collective butts. No one knows what was really going on in Dempster’s head when he kept throwing at Rodriguez this past Sunday. Maybe it was for his involvement in the Biogenesis case and his appeal of a 211-game suspension from Major League Baseball. Many players, fans, and the media have been on A-Rod’s case and feel that he should not be playing with all the allegations that he is facing. It looks like Dempster showed his thoughts when he threw one pitch behind Rodriguez’s knees and then ultimately hit Alex on the elbow to the Fenway Park fans delight. The Boston pitcher has denied on several occasions since Sunday that he was going after A-Rod because of his use of steroids. The intentional hit on Alex proved to backfire on Dempster since the Yankees third baseman was the catalyst for the late inning runs to give New York the win. MLB gave Dempster a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine on Tuesday. Reports state that Ryan did not appeal the penalty.
