Over his storied NBA career, San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson earned many accolades. Ten time All-Star, two time NBA Champion, and member of the 1992 Olympic "Dream Team" are just a few examples.   David has also long been known for his charitable works in San Antonio, and now his many years of philanthropy have earned him the prestigious 2013 Heisman Humanitarian Award.   David will be officially presented the award on December 16th in New York City at the New York Marriott Marquis.   The Heisman Humanitarian Award was established by the Heisman Trophy Trust in 2006. Their mission was to recognize those sports figures that stand out for their charitable work and deeds.   Early in his days as a San Antonio Spur, David began his good works by offering scholarship money to Gates elementary 5th graders that stayed in school and graduated.   Robinson and his wife Valerie then went on to create the David Robinson Foundation aimed at helping children and families in need. A big chunk also went towards creating and running the Carver Academy, which has since become part of the IDEA Public School charter network.   Via navysports.com:   Heisman Trophy Trust President William J. Dockery commented,"This December, the Trust is both proud and pleased to honor David Robinson, whose efforts have positively impacted thousands of people. The Heisman Humanitarian Award was created to not only recognize and honor individuals who give selflessly of themselves to assist underserved segments of our society, but also to encourage others to emulate the Humanitarians."   "I am truly honored by this recognition by the Heisman Trust," said Robinson. "I will represent them and the past winners with integrity and honor."    Over the years since his retirement from the Spurs, virtually everyone in San Antonio has heard about David's' many good deeds. And now, hopefully at least, the whole world will know he is every bit the quality human being that all of us have long known him to be.
