DEATH BY 1,000 CUTS.

Posted August 26, 2013

LITTLE thought has been given to what the no-huddle, Spread-Option fad will do to defensive players in terms of frustration and increased margin of error from fatigue.

When I say "margin of error" understand I mean HIT PLACEMENT. A fatigued and frustrated player is FAR more likely to do something vindictive and stupid, fueled by the heat of the moment. Add to that the smaller strike zones due to rule changes and you have a powder keg in a fire work factory.

I'm reminded of an old "Simpsons" episode where Bart takes Homer's beer to a hardware store to have it shaken up by a paint mixing machine. Later when Homer goes to get his beer out of the fridge it's there vibrating on the shelf. When he opens it ther's an explosion. Not of beer, but an actual explosion. The more I look at everything they keep taking away from defensive players the more

I think there's going to be hell to pay when that side of the ball decides they've COLLECTIVELY had enough. Or worse yet, if a couple guys do and it starts to spiral out of control when stiff fines/suspensions/banishments happen, and the players who suffer these are OVERWHELMINGLY, almost exclusively, defensive players.

I'm not saying that doing stupid and vindictive things is made "okay" by these factors, but I am saying that when you continue to back a man, or even an animal into a corner, the response is generally one of violent behavior.

The NFL may be their own worst enemy with this.
