The Tigers' Justin Verlander is having his worst statistical season in five years and former Detroit ace Denny McLain thinks he knows what's wrong. “Right now his head is moving a great deal when he pitches” McLain told the Detroit News. “That is like a golf swing. When your head is moving in golf you start to play Army golf. Your ball is going left right left right. You’ve got to keep your head still and you’ve got to drive toward the plate. I see him standing upright after a pitch. That is not a good thing.” Verlander is 12-10 with a 3.73 ERA on the season. Not bad for most pitchers but Verlander isn't most pitchers. Just two years ago he was the American League MVP and Cy Young winner. McLain won both those awards in 1968 when he had 31 wins and helped lead the Tigers to the World Series championship. His controversial career ended just four years later when he was 28 and he later was convicted on charges of embezzlement and served time in prison. He thinks age may be catching up to the 30-year-old Verlander. "This could be the first stage of decline where you have to throw a different way. But you can’t go to throwing 75-80 percent curve balls and sliders. You will be dead. He is a bulldog. He loves to pitch but sooner or later you reach that first level of decline.”
