The Detroit Lions are starting to purge their roster as the league prepares to roll into the free agency portion of the year. The Lions could use some help via free agency, but they are currently trying to clear up some salary cap issues. Last week, the team parted ways with veteran defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and they are hoping to enter talks with quarterback Matthew Stafford in order to work out a contract extension. Vanden Bosch, a team leader and high motor player, only recorded 3.5 sacks in 2012 and was set to count $10.7 million against Detroit’s salary cap this season. With Cliff Avril a free agent and Vanden Bosch’s decreasing production on the field, he was simply not worth that number. The Lions are now attempting to try to get a new long-term deal done with QB Matthew Stafford. According to the team’s official website, Stafford is set to count $20 million against the team’s cap number next season. Stafford is a solid quarterback. Now that the injury issues are behind...

Detroit Lions: Team Needs in the 2013 NFL Draft

As we continue the Team Needs series for the 2013 NFL Draft, we proceed to the team with the fifth overall pick; the Detroit Lions. After making a playoff run the year before, many were expecting the Lions to become a threat in the NFC North, but they fell back to their familiar place in 2012; the cellar. In what seemed like a rerun, the Lions lost numerous games in the same fashion...

Lions’ Calvin Johnson films ESPN commercial as “Egg-atron” (VIDEO)

Lions wide received Calvin Johnson is used to catching footballs thrown from Matthew Stafford’s Jugs machine with NFL linebackers and safeties looking to knock his block off.  Recently, he was Bristol, Connecticut at the ESPN headquarters catching passes thrown from SportsCenter anchor Lindsay Czarniak.  But Czarniak was not tossing around the pigskin, but rather a carton...

Lions' 2013 calendar already out of date

The Detroit Lions' roster makeover has turned disastrous for a Waukesha, Wisc., supplier of NFL team calendars. It was bad enough when the Lions' 2013 calendar debuted with the month of January featuring cornerback Aaron Berry. Berry, you'll recall, was released by the Lions way back in July before training camp even opened following two arrests in less than a month...

Lions’ GM looking to give Mathew Stafford an extension

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has indicated that they’re going to look to extend quarterback Mathew Stafford’s contract. One of the issues with the team was discipline, and many point the finger at head coach Jim Schwartz for that. But the Lions [...]

Detroit Lions Notes

A little late getting this to you - but with the server outages, this is as soon as we could get it. Better late than never I suppose! Lions Notes 2/10/2013: Schwartz – Don’t call it a comeback “I wouldn’t call it rebuilding,” Schwartz said Thursday. “There’s been a lot of other words used for it: reloading, whatever you want to call it. Detroit Lions reloading, not rebuilding

Jim Schwartz told the media the Detroit Lions are not rebuilding. Let’s not get this confused with 2009, the Lions aren’t coming off an 0-16 season. How could you even consider rebuilding when stars like Matt Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh are signed? “I wouldn’t call it rebuilding,” Schwartz said Thursday. “There’s been a lot of other words used for...
