MLB Injury News:
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Trevor Cahill on the 15-day disabled list on July 1 with a hip contusion. He had since resumed playing catch, but when he did another issue was discovered. Manager Kirk Gibson described the shoulder setback Cahill is now facing to Tyler Emerick of MLB.com.
"His shoulder didn't feel too good the last time he
threw," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "I don't have a timetable,
we're just trying to keep him throwing on schedule, which he wasn't really able
to do his last time. I have no idea why it happened, but I know it wasn't
Cahill was scheduled to throw again yesterday to see if the discomfort remained, but no word on the session is yet available. The 25-year-old will be limited to this sort of tossing until the pain subsides.
The hip injury that sent Cahill to the DL was sustained when he was hit by a line drive on June 19. He did not consider the ailment to be a factor in his recent struggles, but the shoulder could have been playing a role. After posting an ERA of 2.84 through May, Cahill struggled to the tune of a 9.85 ERA over six June starts.

PHOENIX -- Shortly after being named to the NL All-Star team over the weekend, Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt said he'd consider participating in the Home Run Derby if asked by NL team captain David Wright.
Wright did not get far enough down his list of candidates to ask.

McCarthy is recovering after being placed on the DL with shoulder inflammation, making this the fifth consecutive year that he has sustained an injury in that area. It looks as though McCarthy is on course to return for the Arizona Diamondbacks right after the All-Star break...
There’s aggressiveness on the basepaths, then there’s forcing a play. During the Dodgers’ 6-1 win over the Diamondbacks in Arizona, Yasiel Puig demonstrated the latter.
In the top of the fifth inning, Adrian Gonzalez came to the plate with the bases loaded, driving a long fly ball to straightaway center field. The runners had to freeze as Arizona center fielder Adam Eaton tracked...
PHOENIX -- Kirk Gibson sees a lot of his younger self in rambunctious, sometimes reckless Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig.
"That's refreshing to watch," said Gibson, the Diamondbacks manager.
"Honestly, even from an opponent's point of view, that's refreshing."
Former Tigers manager Sparky Anderson once said Gibson played 150 percent at...
I have come to the conclusion that I am developing an unhealthy obsession with dissecting how MLB players are mechanically improving from one year to the next. First, it started with Chris Davis, then I covered Adam Wainwright, then came Marco Scutaro, and then Bartolo Colon, and next came Max Scherzer, and now Patrick Corbin is on the lab table.
But the difference with...
