DISLIKED: WEEK FOUR

Posted September 30, 2013

THIS week there was SO MUCH not to like I had to put it in a separate post:

1) Our not so Special Teams. Kick return TD? Okay they happen. Blocked punt? Okay they happen. Missed field goal? Not uncommon. Bot all three in ONE GAME? Excuse me, one Mother#$%@! GAME!? I don't put ANY of that by the way, on Dave Fipp. That was all a matter of execution NOT happening.

2) I figured the Defense would have trouble covering underneath (and they did), but I thought if they allowed those shallow outside routes, it would mean that our OLB's would reach Manning. Even if a couple of the hits were late, they'd still do the job. Instead not only could we not cover, but we also couldn't get any pressure. Or tackle reliably on those short routes. Or stop the run.

3) Is it me or does the NFL seem to figured out Chip Kelly already? Yeah I said this would happen and just about predicted how long it would take to do so. It was 5 weeks. (Yes, I counted the preseason.) At this point it's ALL about whether he can adapt to the NFL now. So far in all four games, he's tried to do the same thing in the first second half as he did in the first. Considering that the last three games were losses, that bodes ill for our future. Coaching at this level isn't about game plans or (generally) talent on your roster, it's about being able to make adjustments and learn on the fly. At a certain point yesterday, every time the camera ended up on Kelly his face was blank, he wasn't talking to staff or players. he was reduced to being a spectator. This should NEVER, EVER, EVER happen! There are no circumstances where the General should let the troops see him sitting dumbstruck. Two words: Lane Kiffin.

4) I was disgusted at Kelly throwing in the towel. Almost an entire quarter where second and third stringers were waved like Human white flags. Our EAGLES starters made it a game for 2 quarters, and then lost their footing for a quarter. However instead of fighting back, and trying to own the 4th quarter like the Broncos owned the 3rd, OUR COACH sent the signal that we were tucking tail. As bad as yesterday was, that was the WORST part. We bailed. We cut and ran. Yeah, US! I can't speak for how much fight is in you, but being from HERE that's the part I'M having the hardest time stomaching. Losing a fight is one thing, but going fetal while the other guy pounds you, is quite another. It's an outright act of cowardice, and it made me want to punch Chip Kelly in the face until I blacked out from it! A loss I can understand; but a surrender? That, I just cannot take.

  • One thing I noticed about the ravens they will hit you until the end. They wilted . When things didnt go there way they became disinterested. But I completely disagree with you about talent. I was a mis match plain and simple. I expect a different eagle team vs the Giants. Two bad squads with everything to lose. Either Coughlin or Chip is going down. I think its Toms last year. Book it. Over in NY. chip will squeak by with a close win. I am alittle stunned that there isnt more imagination in our offense. Its very vanilla but there is alot of football left. Im not ready to send chip packing and im usually very suspicious of this owner.
  • You called it Flip. The NFL figured figured him out. They did quit and that comes back to the coach. They were clearly over matched but every team is against the Broncos. Your Raiders showed much more fight than the Eagles did yesterday.
  • That's because the RAIDERS new culture is being built around a fighter's mentality. Coach can't afford to quit or his (and Reggie's), message will fall short.
  • I agree Flip. The Raiders fought out there for four quarters against Denver. I applaud them for that. McKenzie is a good man.
  • I'm not so sure about him being a good man, but I think FOR THE MOST PART, he's a competent GM. (I'm still a little raw from the way he tried to shoehorn Matt Flynn past Terrelle Pyror, because it steamrolled Coach in the process.)

It seems to me that Chip Kelly doesn't know where he is, and is farther out of his depth than most realize.
