DETROIT (AP) -- New Zealand's Scott Dixon won an IndyCar Detroit Grand Prix marred by poor track conditions that stopped the race for a little more than 2 hours on Sunday.
A red flag halted the event 45 laps into a race that was scheduled for 90 laps and shortened to 60.
Belle Isle's 2.07-mile (3.33-kilometer) road course that hadn't hosted a race since 2008 had chunks of asphalt and concrete missing. Pot holes and grooves that were recently filled with tar became exposed. Crews filled the gaps with epoxy that settled enough for the race to resume.
The sprint to the finish was stunted by a caution flag because light rain made a slick track even more slippery. Helio Castroneves spun out as if his car was on a skating rink and finished 17th.
Dixon pulled away after the final restart on lap 55 for his first win of the season, almost 2 seconds in front of teammate Dario Franchitti. The reigning Indianapolis 500 champion made many moves in limited time after starting towa...

Talk about a pot whole. Over the weekend, the Detroit Grand Prix was stopped mid race because a piece of the track crumbled causing pot holes and asphalt to fly. The race was postponed for two hours and shortened from 90 laps to 60, while crews repaired the road.
Driver Scott Dixon won the shortened race, which was the first event the Belle Isle track had hosted since 2008. “We...
It was a bizarre day today here in Detroit. Scott Dixon earned his 28th career IZOD IndyCar Series victory in leading all 60 laps and jumped up to second in the points standings heading to Texas Saturday night, but that will be an afterthought in the wake of the events that transpired in the Motor City today.
After 45 laps the race was red flagged due to the racing surface breaking...
Honda goes 1-2-3 in home race for engine rival ChevroletFirst thing's first -- I didn't get to see Sunday's Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix live due to work obligations and thus, I'll have to wait until INDYCAR puts up the full race on YouTube in the next 36 hours or so. That said, you don't have to have seen the race to know that a 1-2-3 finish for Honda...
Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon mastered Saturday mornings cool, dry and windy conditions at Belle Isle, leading Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay.
Qualifying day today was much better than the rainy gloomy day we had yesterday here in Belle Isle. The skies were blue with the 2.07-mile track being sun drenched during the entire qualifying session for tomorrow's Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.
The clear day and cool 65-degree temperature paved the way for Helio Castroneves' 2007 track record to get shattered...
