The Los Angeles Dodgers open their series with the Los Angeles Angels coming off one of their worst offensive showings in the last century. Considering how inconsistent Angels starter Dan Haren has been, it's anyone's guess if the NL West leaders will get things turned around Friday night. Facing an Oakland staff that came into this week's series with the majors' 10th-best ERA, the Dodgers (42-28) managed two runs and eight hits in being swept. The hit total was the franchise's lowest in a three-game series dating to 1921. "We didn't do enough in any of these games to win any of them,'' manager Don Mattingly said after dropping Thursday's finale 4-1 on a walkoff three-run homer. "We didn't really have guys in scoring position and you can't expect to win when you don't get guys on base.'' The top three hitters in the Dodgers' order - Dee Gordon, Elian Herrera and Andre Ethier - went a combined 2 for 35 without a walk in the series. Ethier's struggles are nothing new - he's batting .171 in 19 June games, dropping his average 41 points to .283. He has had some success against Haren (4-7, 3.97 ERA), though, hitting .386 with two homers and five doubles in 44 career at-bats. Like Ethier, Haren is also in the midst of a rough stretch. The right-hander has yielded nine runs and 18 hits over 11 2-3 innings in his last two starts after posting a 1.29 ERA in his previous three outings. Prior to that, he had a 5.79 ERA in losing four in a row, which followed a three-start stretch in which he had a 1.64 ERA. "When you get hit around, you don't feel good. You go home, and you feel better next time," Haren told the Angels' official website after allowing five runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings of last Friday's 5-0 loss to Arizona. "Just no excuses, really. Got to minimize the mistakes." Haren is no stranger to facing the Dodgers from his time spent with the Diamondbacks. He has pitched well against the Dodgers since 2009, posting a 2.47 ERA in a nine starts. While the Dodgers' offense is struggling mightily, the Angels' could be starting to show some signs of life. The Angels (38-32) plated 18 runs while pounding out 25 hits in winning their last two games over San Francisco after combing for 14 runs yet still going 4-3 in their previous seven. The Angels, five games back of AL West-leading Texas, have the majors' second-best record since May 22 (20-7), and Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo have been instrumental to the run. In the last 23 games, Trout is batting .381 with 23 runs and 16 RBIs, while Trumbo is hitting .341 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs. Trout, Erick Aybar and Alberto Callaspo all homered at Chavez Ravine last week in helping the Angels take two of three. Since 2010, the Angels are 11-4 against the Dodgers, winning all five series. A portion of that success has come against scheduled starter Chad Billingsley (4-5, 3.75), who is 0-3 with a 5.96 ERA in his last four starts in the Freeway Series with the Dodgers losing each time. Billingsley gave up five runs and eight hits in six innings of a 5-4 loss to the White Sox on Saturday. The righty gave up one run over seven innings in winning each of his previous two starts - both on the road. One hitter who hasn't enjoyed facing Billingsley is Albert Pujols. The three-time MVP is 3 for 18 with three walks in their matchups.

Offense becomes punchless without Kemp

The Dodgers continued a trend Wednesday night, one that has seen their offense decline in June. Los Angeles scored one run on just three hits against Tommy Milone, and the Athletics' rookie left-hander pitched a complete game while earning a 4-1 win. The Dodgers have scored just one run on five hits in two games at Oakland. Since Matt Kemp was placed on the disabled list May...

Trout keeps coming through for Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. It's almost getting ridiculous the way Mike Trout is able to conjure up new ways to win games for the Angels. Every day, he comes up with something new, something more spectacular than the previous performance. His teammates have come to expect it, and so has Trout. His speed, his power, his fearless base running all of it has become his calling card. It'...

Weaver helps Angels shutout M's in return

ANAHEIM, Calif. Jered Weaver must have counted the days. Twenty-two of them passed since the last time he pitched in a game, and every one was tortuous. For a starting pitcher, waiting four days between starts is difficult enough. Going on the disabled list, then waiting to heal and inching back to health is almost inhumane. Pitchers want to be on the mound, not on the trainer...

Why My Girlfriend Is Jealous Of Mike Trout

I recently wrote a post at Halo Hangout asking if the Mike Trout love has gone too far. My quick, and obvious, answer was "no." In fact, Trout probably ins't getting enough love. My girlfriend, on the other hand, disagrees.According to her, a Yankees fan I might add, I write and talk about Trout too much. She's starting to get jealous. Of course, she has nothing...

Game Recap 6/22/12 -- Call It A Comeback -- Angels 8 Dodgers 5

Dear Dodger Fans,It's okay. I understand your frustration. Your team was riding high with a solid first couple of innings and looked like you were on your way to righting your sinking ship. We Angel Fans were in your same boat just a dew month ago. We too, would get overly excited about the illusion of our team playing well only to have our hopes dashed by a superior...

Angels catchers in the rye

Historically, there has always been a major deficiency in some facet of Angel's catchers. Bobby Wilson is hitting roughly .175, with 3 RBIs, and recorded his first extra-base hit of the season Wednesday (in 35 games). His stolen base percentage against him is .750, leaving room to improve. Chris Iannetta, John Hester, and Hank Conger are .818, .857, and .714 respectively. None...

Game Recap 6/20/12: Power Play - Angels 6 Giants 0

Wooohooooo, I actually happen to be a pretty smart guy. Not only did I predict a Zito beatdown, but I also called for it to get the ball rolling on some strong offensive production for the Angels. A lot of things when right tonight; the small ball, the long ball, the starting pitching; and speaking of the starting pitching wasn't it awesome to see fresh off the DL Jered Weaver...

Angels 8, Dodgers 5

Rookie sensation Mike Trout hit a go-ahead homer and scored from first base on a single as the Los Angeles Angels rallied from an early five-run deficit against Chad Billingsley to beat the Dodgers 8-5 Friday night in the opener of the season's second Freeway Series. Dan Haren (5-7) allowed five runs, nine hits and three walks over five innings with five strikeouts. Ernesto...

The highest pitching game score of all time

The Game Score statistic was developed by Bill James as a way of giving pitchers a score for each game they pitch. A closer look at how the stat is calculated will be discussed later in this post. The statistic is a way to rate starting pitchers. The average starting pitching Game Score is 49 to 51 (depending on the year). This season's league average is 51. R.A. Dickey currently...

Weaver's strong return leads Halos over Giants

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Jered Weaver pitched six innings of two-hit ball in his return from the disabled list and the Los Angeles Angels beat the San Francisco Giants 6-0 on Wednesday night, handing Ryan Vogelsong his first loss in almost seven weeks. Alberto Callaspo homered against Vogelsong and teammates Kendrys Morales and Mark Trumbo greeted former Angels prospect Shane Loux with...

Even in baseball, life Intrudes

I remember hiding under the covers and listening to the Angels on a hand-held transistor radio while I was supposed to be asleep.  The lights were out and the volume was down and that radio was very close to my ear.  My dad was in the next room, his den, almost always listening to the game just as I was.  Once in a while he’d walk over to my room, open the door and say, “we...

Tater Trot Tracker: Trot Times for June 22 by Larry Granillo

Time for the weekend! Let's get right to the trots. Home Run of the Day: Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels - 19.38 seconds [video] Coming immediately on the heels of a successful suicide squeeze (successful thanks to a missed tag by AJ Ellis), Angels Stadium was already rocking when Trout took the first pitch he saw deep over the centerfield wall to give the Angels a late lead...
