The Dodgers and Cubs have been working diligently on a trade for Ryan Dempster. Talks have been going for over a month now, that of course has led to what now is a major impasse. We’ve heard the dialogue between the two teams has come to almost a complete halt, though both sides still hope they can come to a deal.

The Dodgers have talked multiple scenarios with the Cubs, involving multiple different prospects, but so far the two sides can’t agree to a deal. The Cubs are desperate to unload Dempster before Tuesday’s non-waiver trade deadline, but the Dodgers and Dempster hold all of the cards, making it nearly impossible for the Cubs to get the prospects they want from the Dodgers.

The Cubs recently proposed a straight swap of Allen Webster for Dempster, but the Dodgers rejected the deal. Now it seems the Dodgers are working towards a multi-player deal involving Dempster and either Alfonso Soriano or Bryan LaHair. Unfortunately that hasn’t helped propel the teams any closer to a deal. There is also a lot of speculation from that the Dodgers are waiting to hear from the Marlins, Rays, Phillies, and throw at least a handful of other teams in there before they revisit talks with the Cubs.

It’s looking doubtful that Matt Garza is traded in the next three days. It’s growing more and more likely that Garza remains a Cub until the off-season where he will likely then be traded. Garza hasn’t shown any interest in remaining with the Cubs long term, so a deal is still very likely at some point.

It still seems inevitable that the Dodgers make a couple of acquisitions in the next couple of days. It’s the who and when that still remain big question marks.
