Jarred Cosart of the Astros made his long-awaited major league debut last night. The results were...stunning. His MLB debut came against a Rays team that had won eight games in a row. Opposing him was David Price, the reigning AL Cy Young winner who has been positively dominant since coming off of the DL. All Cosart did was no-hit the Rays over 6 1/3 innings, hold them scoreless over eight, and pick up the win despite the best efforts of shortstop Jake Elmore and closer Jose Veras. Hey Astros fans: this is your future. Smile a little bit. PIC OF THE DAY Marcell Ozuna tumbles in Miami. (Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports) Game of the Night: Red Sox 4, Athletics 2. There really weren't a lot of great games last night, so this matchup in Oakland wins by default. Both starters exited after seven with the game knotted at two, and it turned into a battle of the bullpens. The A's pen blinked first, as Ryan Cook allowed a two run single to Dustin Pedroia after Sean Doolittle created a mess by putting two men on. Andrew Bailey and Koji Uehara struck out five of the final six hitters they faced for Boston to close out the victory. Before I go into the Lines of the Night, I just want to say that I'm estimating today, as ESPN.com is down nearly across the board, and that's where I typically go for game scores and such. Pitching Lines of the Night: Corey Kluber dominated the Royals in a 3-0 Indians win, allowing three hits over 7 2/3 shutout innings, striking out eight and walking three. The aforementioned Cosart allowed two hits in eight scoreless frames, walking three and striking out a pair in Houston's 2-1 win. David Price nearly matched him, allowing a pair of runs on eight hits, striking out three without a walk and finishing up a complete game in the process. Jeremy Hefner pitched well for the Mets in their 3-2, 11 inning loss in Pittsburgh, giving up two runs on three hits in seven innings, punching out three without a walk. Bronson Arroyo dazzled the Braves in a 4-2 Reds win, allowing one run on three hits in seven frames, striking out three and walking one. Jarrod Parker pitched well for the A's in their loss to Boston, giving up two runs on three hits in seven innings, walking none and fanning three. Hitting Lines of the Night: Raul Ibanez continued to rake for the Mariners, going 3/4 with a double, two homers, and three RBI in their 8-3 victory over the Angels. Carlos Beltran carried the Cardinals to a 3-2 win at Wrigley, going 3/4 with a double, a triple, a run scored, and an RBI. Buster Posey helped the Giants to a 10-1 laugher over the Padres, going 2/5 with a double and five RBI. AJ Pierzynski *was* the Rangers offense in their 7-2 loss to the Tigers, going 3/4 with a solo homer. Adam Jones provided some offense for the Orioles in their 8-5 win over the Blue Jays, going 3/4 with three runs, three RBI, a double, and a homer. Other Games: The Yankees shut out the Twins 2-0. The Marlins smashed Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals 8-3. The Diamondbacks edged the Brewers 2-1. The Rockies shut down the Dodgers 3-0 as Juan Nicasio outdueled Clayton Kershaw. Rain postponed the White Sox-Phillies game until today. What You Missed: Hank Conger of the Angels caught a fish with his glove in Seattle. OK then. This week's watchability rankings. Amanda took a look at MasterCard's Dig In and Do Good campaign. Today's Games: Mike Minor and the Braves host Homer Bailey and the Reds. Lance Lynn and Matt Garza will duel in Chicago. Tyler Chatwood and Zack Greinke will go at it in Los Angeles. Derek Holland takes on Max Scherzer in Detroit. AJ Burnett and the Pirates host the Mets. Jose Fernandez and the Marlins host the Nationals. Jon Lester starts for the Red Sox in Oakland against AJ Griffin. Jered Weaver and the Angels take on Felix Hernandez and the Mariners in Seattle. Kyle Lohse starts for the Brewers in Arizona against Randall Delgado. National TV: Twins-Yankees (1 PM, MLB Network), Cardinals-Cubs (7 PM, Fox), Rockies-Dodgers (7 PM, Fox), Rangers-Tigers (7 PM, Fox), Mets-Pirates (7 PM, Fox), Nationals-Marlins (7 PM, Fox), Red Sox-Athletics (10 PM, MLB Network), Brewers-Diamondbacks (10 PM, MLB Network) MLB.tv Free Game: Reds-Braves (4 PM) Pitching Matchup of the Day: Derek Holland vs Max Scherzer (Rangers vs Tigers, 7 PM) Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
