With their second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Eagles have selected tight end Zach Ertz out of Stanford. Ertz stands at 6-6 and 249 pounds and should be the red zone threat the Eagles have lacked over the years. Many gave him a first round grade and many ranked him higher than Tyler Eifert, the Notre Dame tight end who went in the middle of the first round. Ertz is an athletic tight end who creates mismatches with opposing defenses. During his senior year at Stanford, Ertz racked up 69 receptions for 898 yards and six touchdowns. Oddly enough, his best game came against Chip Kelly’s Oregon Ducks where he recorded 11 receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown in an overtime win. Many believed the Eagles may look to bulk up the tight end position in the draft this year, it was a matter of when they would do it. With a talent like Ertz still on the board early in the second round, it looks like the Eagles found it hard to pass up on him. It will be interesting how Kelly fits him into the offense with James Casey and Brent Celek on the roster. Ertz’s athleticism should be a great pairing with Casey who is also extremely athletic and allow the Eagles to get a ton of production out of the tight end position. There’s no doubting that Ertz will see a lot of time on the field as a rookie and I think Kelly is very high on the weapons he will have as he heads into the 2013 season.
