EAGLES FANS ON YARDBARKER

Posted February 01, 2013

RECENTLY I've been rather mum about talking about the Eagles here on YB.

Part of it was the lack of substantive news. Part of it was the distraction of getting back into mudslinging shape. (Once you've stopped for a bit, you lose a taste for it. You have to find a way to motivate yourself to do it. Like rooting for a side in a Super Bowl when you don't care for either team. YES! There are some teams I don't like (gasp!))

Most of it however, was that I wanted to watch you all for a bit.

For all the hub-bub over who is or who isn't happy with the coach we got, I'm not reading about any real confidence on here. Sure, some folks are expecting a .500 or better result this year, and that's cool for them to forecast. The "W" to "L" ratio aside, what I'm not seeing here is just WHAT the fans expect the team to hang it's hat on, outside of essentially the Eagles running the 2-Minute Offense all game, every game.

There's another post on the forum asking for "Realistic Expectations". When I saw it posted I began to check it MULTIPLE times a day. It bordered on religious fervency actually. (Yes EZ, religious fervency.) Folks are all over the map on what they expect, but they don't nail down any "why's" with it.

Maybe my point isn't clear. Let me come at this another way:

Any other year, people would say "Shady will run for 1000" or "DJax will catch 8 TD's" or "Cole might challenge for NFL Sack leader this year". Even before the Combine. Fans would say they thought we needed to draft something to put with what we already knew we had. You don't read that now. The talk of drafting a QB is almost a defensive measure to insulate us from what we have already. The term Offensive Line has become a taboo subject, getting as many serious mentions on here as elderly midget porn.

Questions about the Defense are next to impossible to answer. What are we running? Who's running it? Who's on it?  Who's starting? Where will they even line up if they start?  These are questions you can legitimately ask every year, of any NFL franchise I suppose; but we're at a point where we don't know if Trent Cole is still a DE anymore. Since no one can answer a single question about it, Defense isn't even discussed on here at length anymore.

I'm seriously looking forward to seeing the Eagles share with their fans just what their new identity is supposed to be. I've never rooted for an Eagles team that had my or my city's personality, and I don't expect they'll adopt that now. Still it would be nice to get to meet who it is I'm supposed to feel confident in backing.

  • How can we make predictions (something I rarely do anyway) when HUGE changes are so new? We have no clue right now what Kelly's plans are, we aren't sure WHO these coaches are that they have been hiring or what position they will be coaching and we have NO clue who the starting quarterback will be. We don't know what type of turnover this team will be looking at in the next couple seasons. Why make predictions at this point...what good will they do? Way too may questions around this team right now and in my opinion it is totally understandable. The answers will come in time (it is only February 1st after all) but some won't be answered until the season starts.
  • And that's my point here.

A couple weeks back I was said to be predicting doom and gloom for the future. I gave that some thought and decided to sit back a little and see what everyone was feeling. To try and get a sense of what it is that I'm missing.

In a sense I was trying to find the optimism that allowed me to see an 8-8 team as being able to bounce back and win the division. (I could list those factors but the point would be moot as the team went 4-12, and the sports adage of "If you're right you're a genius, but if you're wrong you're the village idiot", still holds true.)

I want to feel good about the team whose crap adorns my home, whose logo appears at the neck of the sleeveless shirt I'm wearing right now, whose name adorns the hat on my son's head as he is presently heading home from school.

I just need to see factors that inspire confidence. I won't say the Eagles will be winners simply because I've grown used to doing so, or because I'm partial to them. It has to be real for me.
  • The Eagles are a broken football team, and despite who the coach is the Eagles most likely will struggle next season. At least coming into the season we can accept it, because there is no illusions of greatness. There is no Super Bowl or bust talk from players. There is no dream team talk. No prognosticators expecting them to be great. That's what made last season so frustrating. Expectations were high and the production was low. That's why fans were so angry. That's why you got so much backlash, because you challenged our dedication to our team when we were angry about their performance. Now look at you. The same person trashing us can barely muster a moment of support for the team with the "crap" you have all over your walls. Now that the team is broken, and rebuilding they are going to need your support. For once it will be just like you want it. You can sit back and watch football with no expectations. After all from your perspective winning a Super Bowl is irrelevant, as such winning at all is irrelevant.
  • Winning is not irrelevant. The local economy has benefited for years without a Super Bowl, but it suffered when we had an extended downturn.

Like I said to GTD, I want something to be confident in. What is it I'm supposed to be supporting besides the name Eagles? That's what I'm waiting for.

Nobody was thrilled when Andy Reid was hired. Me either. With me Reid had to earn it. Now Kelly has to earn it. The difference between the two was that Reid got us talking as fans. We saw that he was going somewhere whether we agreed or not. He focused on building a staff that led to smart drafts, which led to the best run in Philadelphia Eagles history.

Look around. It's not just me looking for that foothold.
  • Im just going to sit back and see what unfolds this first year under Kelly
