Falcons defensive signal-caller Sean Weatherspoon is out for an indefinite
amount of time with an open dislocation to his left finger, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Weatherspoon was
reportedly injured during practice Monday. Falcons’ head coach Mike Smith later
told reporters that the timeline for the injury will be based on how quickly
the wound heals.
injury could have been much worse. After all, he did not break any bones in the
finger. Plus the injury occurred relatively early in the preseason, so there is
no need to rush him back. However, the Falcons’ medical staff will take a
vigilant stance to monitor for infection and any further damage to the hand. Weatherspoon
has become a key contributor for Atlanta’s defense over the last couple
seasons. Last year, he was their second-leading tackler.
It’s hard to
imagine this injury causing Weatherspoon to miss any time in significant games.
Though the importance of gaining cohesion within a unit during the preseason cannot
be understated, Weatherspoon is familiar with the Falcons’ system and should be
able to pick up right where he left off.
