Remember back when you played little league ball and the coaches actually made a point to make sure everyone played? You know how that logic pretty much fell by the wayside by time you got to high school? As for college--forget about it! It's all about winning first, and playing time second (a distant second). Saturday night that wasn't the case for Notre Dame or Lousville though. Both teams really needed every player on their respective rosters to finish the game. Why? Because it was the longest one in Big East history. The two squads battled through not just one overtime period or two; heck, they didn't just make it through three or four OTs. These guys needed five overtime periods on top of regulation play before someone finally decided to win. Since the game dragged on so long some guys were bound to foul out. To be honest, with the game lasting so long I am surprised that each team only had four guys each record five fouls. Incidentally, the Fighting ...

Notre Dame Fails At College Gameday; Good Job, Good Effort

Hosting ESPN’s College Gameday is a privilege. Not all teams are fortunate enough to host the Gameday crew each season. Louisville can attest to that. Despite having the newest and nicest arena in college basketball, Gameday has yet to make the trip to the Yum! Center in its three year existence. Shame on you, Notre Dame. On a morning where you’re supposed to represent for your...

Notre Dame Student Hits Half-Court Shot, Wins $18,000

ESPN’s College GameDay has a challenge sponsored by State Farm: hit a half court shot within 18 seconds, win $18,000. Seems simple enough, especially considering it’s not an in-game showcase, but rather in front of a handful of fellow students, the men’s basketball team, and some guy wearing a bunny hat. Still, only two participants had made the shot — until today. Notre...

Notre Dame, The Big Ten, And The Future Schedule Battle

One of the most overlooked, yet the most realistic reason that Notre Dame would have ever considered full conference affiliation in football with any conference, is the future scheduling conflict that will come with larger major conferences. It wasn't money, or TV rights, or recruiting, or any reason that a typical school looks at in conference realignment; it was how Notre Dame...

Notre Dame Knocks Off Louisville in a Quick 5-OT’s

It is about this exact time in February when the sports world starts to shift their focus from football of all sorts, to basketball of all sorts. Last night in South Bend was the perfect transition which provided me a little closure from the NFL season being over and done. The #25 Irish took #10 Louisville to 5 overtimes and finally closed the deal 104-101. The game clocked in...

Mike Brey Talked About 15-Round Boxing Matches Before Notre Dame’s 5 OT Win Over Louisville (Video)

It was almost as if Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey knew a five-overtime game against Louisville was coming. The No. 25 Fighting Irish watched videos of great boxing matches before their marathon win over No. 11 Louisville on Saturday night. Brey talked to the players about going deep into a match — and now the Irish players know what that feels like. ”I talked about it being...

Manti Te'o: How Far Does He Slide in the 2013 NFL Draft

The biggest question leading into the NFL Draft surrounds the likely drop in stock of former Notre Dame linebacker, Manti Te'o. Entering the NCAA title game vs. Alabama, it was widely rumored he would be in the top five, if not the top pick overall. Today, mock drafts have him going anywhere from the top 10 to slipping into the 2nd round. The first portion of this debate should...

Whatever it Takes

Notre Dame played nearly two games over the weekend, and however thrilling, the victory counted just once in the Big East standings. But the momentum gained from the gut-check thriller should prove invaluable for a 19-5 squad, not to mention its previously struggling swingman who helped bring home the win through 56 grueling minutes and myriad defensive assignments.
