This is kind of a tough one to ferret out. I would have said their QB situation needs to be fixed, but they released Jake Delhomme and have handed over the offense to Matt Moore. That looks like solid move, but with an 8-8 record this team needs something. I would normally say, they could get that something in the NFL draft, but for the second year in a row they do not have a first round draft pick. They haven’t been active in Free Agency, so maybe the problem lies with management.

Personally, I like the moves that Carolina has made this year so far. Anyone who is a Panthers fan knows that this current regime has a very conservative style so they are taking their time. They have found some very good bargains in free agency towards the end of the period in years past. I expect them to do the same this year. In my opinion, their only glaring holes are: (1) #2 wide receiver, (2) backup QB, (3) linebacker depth. Backup QBs are fairly easy to find. A veteran like Kyle Boller, Daunte Culpepper, or Chris Simms is likely. They could also draft someone like Tim Tebow or Dan Lefeveour or Tony Pike. Wide receiver will be the toughest position to adequately fill. Unrestricted free agent options are scarce, although there are some veterans who could help the team: Torry Holt, Laveraneus Coles, T.O. (preferably Holt of those 3). There are some great fits in restricted market like Vincent Jackson, Brandon Marshall, and Malcolm Floyd, although high draft pick compensation would be needed to nab one of those three. It is unwise to count on a rookie to start at WR so I think you will either see Dwayne Jarrett, Kenneth Moore or one of the above mentioned players opposite of Steve Smith next year. A draft pick would be a good fit for a linebacker. There is depth this year at that position and a starter caliber player should be available whien Carolina picks in the 2nd round. Keith Bullock or Pisa Tinoisamoa are also free agent options who Carolina could pick up at a bargain if they do not find a home soon. I think the best fits would be Torry Holt, Chris Simms, and Ricky Sapp, LB/DE out of Clemson.
